As the R in its name implies, the 2016 Porsche 911 R is a road-going race-homologated limited edition model featuring lightweight construction and exceptional performance. Limited to just 991 units worldwide, the 911 R is the lightest model in the 911 range, tipping the scales at just 3,021 lbs.
In keeping with its back to basics nature, the 2016 Porsche 911 R is powered by a naturally aspirated flat six producing 500 horsepower and driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. Similar to the engine found in the 911 GT3 RS, the 3.8-liter boxer engine produces 338 lb ft of torque and enables the R model to accelerate to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 200 mph.
Minimalistic looks, high tech
Unlike the GT3 RS, the new R has a minimalist approach to its design, eschewing the large fixed rear wing seen on most race special in favor of the standard deployable rear wing similar to those used on standard 911 Porsche Carrera models. Weight-saving measures include using carbon fiber for the front luggage compartment lid and the front fenders as well as magnesium for the roof, all of which contribute to a lower center of gravity and thereby improving handling. Reduced interior insulation, removal of the back seat and the lack of air conditioning or sound system on base models also contribute to the lighter curb weight. Overall, the R is 100 pounds lighter than the GT3 RS.
Among the high tech, race-inspired features that give the 911 R its performance prowess are carbon ceramic brakes, a locking rear differential, ultra-high performance tires, an automatic rev-match feature activated at the touch of a button and a recalibrated Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system design specifically for the car by Porsche’s motorsports department.
Inside, the cabin features full bucket seats with carbon fiber backs and inserts upholstered in a classic Porsche houndstooth design, a 911 R specific sport steering wheel, a shortened gearshift lever for quicker throws, carbon fiber accents and race-inspired pull straps instead of conventional door releases. Orders for the car, which retails for $184,900 plus $1,050 destination, are being taken now with deliveries slated to begin in the U.S. by late summer.
