Better-late-than-never, the 2016 Nissan Murano lineup has just added a new gas-electric model. Originally announced last spring and offered in SL Hybrid and Platinum trim grades, these more fuel-efficient Murano hybrids swap the 260-horspower/3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 in standard versions for a 2.5-liter supercharged 4-cylinder mated to an electric motor. That pairing cranks out 249 horses while boosting city/highway EPA stats to 28/31 mpg in FWD mode and 26/30 mpg in AWD form compared to the V6 Murano’s 21/28 numbers in either configuration.

The new Murano Hybrids also feature Nissan’s Intelligent Dual Clutch System on the Xtronic CVT transmission and uses a lithium-ion battery pack to energize the motor. The hybrids also feature an EcoMode and electric power instrumentation. If this sounds a bit familiar, it’s pretty much the same setup used in the now-departed Pathfinder Hybrid last sold here in 2014. Opting to travel the greener route will command a $3,000 premium, with the leather-lined and Bose-equipped Murano SL Hybrid opening at $40,950 and the Murano Platinum with LED headlamps, climate-controlled front seat and heated rear seats starting at $43,000. Adding AWD bumps prices by $1,600.
