Arriving in showrooms this April, the hot new 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S is set to open at $130,825. This more-affordable follow-up to the Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS AMG is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by the Mercedes-AMG operation and complements its 503-horsepower/4.0-liter twin-turbo AMG V8 engine and 7-speed AMG SpeedShift DCT automatic transaxle with a huge roster of standard features.

On the performance side, the new GT S includes everything from AMG Adaptive Suspension with AMG 3-Stage ESP, staggered-size 19-inch front/20-inch rear lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin performance tires, eight airbags, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Adaptive Braking and LED headlamps. Key creature features include Nappa leather upholstery, power heated/memory AMG performance seats, the latest Comand telematics package, a primo Burmester Surround Sound System, rearview camera and Parktronic.

As promised when the car was unveiled last fall at the Paris Auto Show, the 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT S will be joined by a "base" GT variant in the spring of 2016. While again confirming that the 4.0-liter AMG twin-turbo engine in that model will make 456 horses — a figure that raises its 0-60 mph time to 3.9 seconds, up from 3.7 ticks in the GT S — the automaker says additional details on the GT’s pricing and packaging won’t be released until closer to its actual on-sale date.

More High-Performance Cars

It’s a good time for high-dollar headturners. At the Detroit Auto Show in January, Acura treated us to the second coming of the NSX and Ford surprised everyone with a new GT. And while the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is a bargain compared to these others, it recently exceeded our lofty expectations at the racetrack.
