Following Chevy’s announcement regarding optional diesel power for its 2016 Colorado midsize pickup, GMC said its 2016 Canyon also will be available with the same new 2.8-liter/4-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel to complement its existing 4-cylinder and V6 gasoline engines. Here, too, this sophisticated and extremely clean oil-burner will make 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque and be backed by a modified 6-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission fitted with a Centrifugal Pendulum Vibration Absorber in the torque converter that helps reduce noise and vibration.
The Duramax engine will be offered on 2016 Canyon SLE and SLT Crew Cab models with rear-drive or GMC’s AutoTrac automatic 4WD. Stepping up to what’s projected to be the most fuel-efficient Canyon variant will exact a $3,730 price premium over a comparably equipped V6 model. Part of the Duramax package is GM’s "smart" diesel exhaust brake system that improves control and helps reduce brake wear on steep grades plus a new and exclusive integrated trailer brake controller. All 4WD versions also get a new, electronically controlled 2-speed transfer case.

Another tangible benefit of opting for Duramax power includes impressive jumps in towing capacity and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating numbers. Maximum trailer loads rise to 7,700 pounds on rear-drive Canyons and 7,600 on 4WD models compared to the 7,000-pound stat for a V6 while GVWR numbers rise by 300 pounds on both variants, to 6,000 and 6,200 pounds, respectively.

Like all 2016 Canyon models, Duramax-equipped versions will benefit from enhancements to the GMC IntelliLink infotainment system that will now offer Apple CarPlay capability. The 2016 GMC Canyon with Duramax option will arrive in showrooms this fall.
