Further popping its already formidable appeal, the 2016 Ford Mustang will offer a number of new packages for various model lines when it arrives in showrooms this fall. Buyers also will be able to choose from a selection of optional cosmetic accent items including over-the-top racing stripes in silver or black and a Boss 302-style painted black top on EcoBoost-equipped or GT-spec variants. All GTs will come standard with a new "heritage cue" first seen in 1967 – turn signal indicators in the hood vents – and can be had with a new Black Accent Package that nets unique 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels, a black decklid spoiler, dark taillamp trim and blackout logos.
California Special makes a comeback
Introduced as a limited-edition for the 1968 Mustang and last offered on the 2014 model, a new-gen California Special Package returns this fall for the GT Premium Fastback and Convertible models. Key elements this time around include bespoke 19-inch ebony-finish machined aluminum wheels, a performance front splitter, pedestal rear spoiler, unique grille/pony logo, dark hood/side stripes and taillamp accents, faux racing-style gas cap and a front strut-tower brace.

Inside, these 2106 CS cars will feature Ebony leather/Miko suede seat inserts with red contrast stitching and an embossed logo, custom door trim inserts and premium carpeting, unique aluminum dashboard finish and a California Special badge.
Performance Package for Mustang drop-tops
Available only on the Mustang GT Fastback in 2015, the enthusiast-grade Performance Package will be offered on the GT Convertible in 2016 — provided it’s equipped with a manual transmission. Bringing structural reinforcements plus unique tuning for its upgraded suspension, steering and stability controls, Performance Package cars also net a larger radiator, Torsen limited-slip differential, 3:71:1 axle ratio, unique staggered-width 19-inch ebony-finish alloy wheels wrapped in summer-spec tires and 6-piston Brembo brakes. Rounding out the mix are an aggressive front splitter and an engine-turned instrument panel with auxiliary gauges.
Pony Package and Sync 3 on the way
Due to arrive in "late 2015," Ford will offer a new-era Pony Package for Mustang EcoBoost Premium models. The cosmetic-only upgrade for the Fastback brings unique 19-inch polished-aluminum wheels, a tri-bar Pony logo on the grille, side stripe and chrome window surrounds. All Premium-grade 2016 Mustangs also will come with Ford’s new Sync 3 infotainment system. Pricing for all of the 2016 Ford Mustangs and the new packages will be released closer to the actual on-sale dates.
