Already a multiple award winner, FCA’s versatile 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gets a major makeover of its own for 2016 destined to add even more luster to its legend. Set to make its first appearance in the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the redone Pentastar benefits from a host of changes that, depending on its applications, collectively help bump peak torque by more than 14.9 percent below 3,000 rpm where it really counts most and also contribute to over a six-percent gain in overall fuel economy.

Introducing variable valve lift and more

Highlighting the enhancements on this revised Pentastar V6 are a new two-step variable valve lift (VVL) system to complement its upgraded variable valve timing  (VVT) setup, both of which are designed to help reduce parasitic pumping losses. The remake also brought a new cooled exhaust-gas-recirculation system, higher 11.3:1 compression ratio, more efficient 8-orifice fuel injectors and redesigned cylinder heads with high-tumble intake ports and shrouded combustion chambers. Engineers also managed to reduce internal friction levels and trim four pounds out of the engine’s weight. Like all other 2016 FCA gasoline engines intended for use here in the U.S., the new 3.6-liter Pentastar also is designed to be E15 compatible.

"With more than 5 million Pentastars on the road, we have clearly struck a chord in the marketplace," says Bob Lee, FCA North America Vice President – Engine, Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion and Systems Engineering. "Our customers have made clear their profound appreciation for the 3.6-liter Pentastar, and we feel the upgraded Pentastar will evoke similarly strong emotions."
