2016 Dodge Challenger and Charger go Plum Crazy, again

Dodge is resurrecting its iconic muscle-car heritage paint schemes for the coming year as both the 2016 Challenger and Charger models will be offered in Plum Crazy, a hue first seen in 1970. The newest Dodges to sport the vibrant purple color are set to hit the streets this weekend at Detroit’s Woodward Dream Cruise. Tim Kuniskis, President and Chief Executive Officer – Dodge Brand and SRT Brand, FCA – North America, sees the Motor City’s annual gathering of high-profile muscle machines as the perfect backdrop for the public unveiling.

Except for the base version of each, all other 2016 Challenger coupe and Charger sedan variants – including the 707-horsepower Supercharged Hemi SRT Hellcats – will be will be available in Plum Crazy, but only for a limited time. Customers can begin placing orders next month while standard dealer ordering commences in October. Production starts in November and will cease at the end of the year. "From the aggressive and in-your-face styling of the SRT Hellcat models, the reverberating black stripes on our Shaker models, to the nostalgic dual A-line side stripes in satin black or gloss white on the R/T Classic model – Plum Crazy further builds on Dodge brand’s muscle-car roots and adds to Challenger and Charger’s vibrant legacy," said Mark Trostle, Head of Dodge and SRT Design, FCA US LLC.

Since the Charger and Challenger returned to the Dodge lineup in 2006 and 2008, respectively, various limited-edition colors from Top Banana and Toxic Orange to High Octane Red and Blue Streak have accounted for less than 11 percent of the entire combined 1.5 million unit sales mix. According accounting of those vehicles, the rarest Dodge Charger year/color combo was in 2013 when Hemi Orange appeared on just 48 SRT8 and SRT8 Super Bee models. On the Charger side of the ledger, that honor goes to the ’14 Mopar Shaker finished in Bright White, of which just 51 were produced.
