Bolstering the dynamic character as well as the curb appeal of the 2016 BMW M3 and M4 models, the automaker introduced Competition Packages for these hot compact coupes and sedans. Available for all versions of the cars starting this spring, the go-faster/corner-better upgrade start with a modest tweak to the engine control computer that bumps output of the M-Spec 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 from 425 to 444 horsepower and cuts 0.1 second off of the 0-60 mph sprint times of each. When equipped with the optional 7-speed M Double Clutch transmission, the M3’s time drops to just 3.8 ticks and the M4’s to 4.1. An M sports exhaust system with black chrome outlets adds its own excitement.

The Competition Package chassis revamp is based around the Adaptive M Suspension with revised springs/shocks/anti-roll bars as well as remapped driving modes along with recalibrated tuning of the Dynamic Stability Control and Active M Differential on the rear axle. Rounding out the functional upgrades is a set of staggered-width, machine-polished forged 20-inch M alloy wheels with 265/30-front and 285/30 rear performance rubber. On the cosmetic front, the Competition Package has an enhanced version of the BMW Individual Shadow Line exterior trim that matches basic high-gloss black accents with similar finish on the grille, side gills and rear-deck badge. Adding a Competition Package to a 2016 M3 Coupe or Sedan will add $5,500 to the base price and $5,000 to an M4 Convertible.
