Putting a modern twist on a heritage performance-package option, the 2016 BMW 435i ZHP Coupe will be hitting select showrooms in July. Originally used on a factory-fortified version of the 2003-2006 E46 Series M3, this latest ZHP-spec variant also boasts a selection of enthusiast-oriented upgrades that boost power, sharpen handling and add more style while enhancing the car’s wind-cheating prowess. Only 100 of the 2016 435i ZHP Coupe will be built, all finished in either Alpine White or Black Sapphire Metallic.

Stepping hard on the exhilarator pedal

Effectively raising the output of its 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-6, the 435i ZHP Coupe is fitted with a BMW M Performance Engine Kit that pumps the pony count from 300 to 335 and bumps peak torque from 300 lb-ft to 317 when backed by the standard 6-speed manual transmission or 332 lb-ft when paired with the optional 8-speed sport automatic. In either case, the upgrade provides more immediate throttle response in Comfort/Sport/Sport+ modes and reduces 0-60 mph sprint times by 0.2 second. Working with an 8.8-pound lighter and free-flowing stainless steel M Performance Exhaust, the Engine Kit also adds a distinctive "burble" during overrun conditions.

To fully exploit its extra motive force, the 435i ZHP Coupe features BMW’s new-for-2016 Track Handling Package that includes the automaker’s Active M Suspension with variable damping plus Variable Sport Steering and upsized M Sport brakes as well as 18-inch V-Spoke alloys finished in Orbit Grey. It also benefits from an M Performance Limited Slip Differential that fully integrates with its dynamic stability control system to allow an instantaneous 30 percent lockup on acceleration and 9 percent locking during deceleration while enhancing overall traction on any road surface.

The final flourish on the BMW 435i ZHP Coupe remix is an M Sport Package. On the functional front, the option includes an M Performance Aerodynamics Package that has a carbon fiber front splitter, rear spoiler and lower diffuser which are cosmetically set off by black kidney grille inserts and Aluminum Hexagonal Trim with gloss black accents. The car also is fitted with an M Sport steering wheel. Pricing for the 2016 BMW 435i ZHP Coupe Edition will be announced closer to its actual on-sale date.
