While holding off on its in-the-flesh reveal until a later date, Honda did use the New York Auto Show to present the first official images of its upcoming compact crossover and formally confirm that it will be called the HR-V. Based on the same Global Compact Series platform that underpins the new-gen 2015 Fit, the 2015 Honda HR-V is set to arrive in showrooms this winter. Like the Fit, this smartly styled but even more practical newcomer will be built at a new Honda plant in Celaya, Mexico.

Honda remains fairly tight-lipped on details, but the U.S HR-V appears to be a near cosmetic clone of the Japanese-market Honda Vezel that was introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show last November. We also know that the HR-V’s versatile and roomy 5-passenger cabin features the automaker’s trick foldaway Magic Seat that permits a variety of different configurations to handle various people- and cargo-carrying duties. Although there’s still no word on its powertrain, there’s every reason to believe the Honda HR-V initially will share the same 130-horsepower/1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and CVT automatic found in the new Fit. We expect to hear more details about the 2015 Honda HR-V to during the next few months and anticipate a likely U.S debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
