2014 Range Rover Evoque Long Term Introduction

Think of a Range Rover and a hulking, luxuriously equipped SUV will likely come to mind. For decades these premium British sport utilities have endeared themselves to adventurers thanks to off-road abilities that enable these 4-wheel-drive vehicles to roam to the ends of the earth. Nowadays these premium models in the Land Rover lineup are just as popular with celebrities thanks to their rugged style, ample power and an exclusivity that comes with driving a vehicle that can easily top $100,000.

The Evoque, though, is a different kind of Range Rover. While it’s loaded with premium features and amenities, it stands apart from its bigger brothers in size, efficiency and cost. It’s also the newest member of the Kelley Blue Book long term test fleet. Over the coming year, we’ll put the Evoque through its paces on-road and off. Most of all, we’ll use the Evoque just as you would: To haul groceries, pick up kids, commute to and from work, and integrate it into our daily lives in general. We’ll report our findings in both written and video form, relaying our likes and dislikes along the way. First, a little more about this unique Range Rover. 

Smaller, more efficient, less-expensive 

At 171.5 inches in length, the Evoque is even shorter than compact SUVs such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, making it the smallest Range Rover by far. It’s also the most efficient. Unlike the Land Rover Range Rover and Range Rover Sport that use a V6 and V8 engine, the Evoque is motivated by a 240-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder that is rated at 30 mpg on the highway.

The Evoque also stands out for lower cost compared to other Range Rovers. At just over $42,000, the Evoque is the least-expensive model in the lineup, coming in at more than $20,000 below the Range Rover Sport. Yet another trait unique to the Evoque is that it’s available as a traditional 4-door SUV or a more stylistically-designed 2-door. Both have a 2-row, 5-passenger seating configuration.

Despite being so different from traditional Range Rovers, the Evoque has been a clear winner for the brand since its 2012 model year launch. In fact, the Evoque has become the fastest-selling Land Rover to date. And while you’re far more likely to find the Evoque zipping through urban confines rather than slogging through mud, it’s still a Land Rover. That means it comes standard with all-wheel drive and Land Rover’s Terrain Response System that optimizes the vehicle for tackling various off-road surfaces.

Certified pre-owned

We’re not the first stewards of this particular Evoque. This is a 2014 model that arrived in our fleet with over 11,000 miles on the odometer. But like our Buick Enclave long-term test vehicle, this Range Rover is a CPO, or certified pre-owned. Thus, it has been combed over by a dealer to verify it is in optimal operating condition. Just as important, CPO vehicles usually come with a warranty for further peace of mind. Per Land Rover’s process, a CPO Range Rover like this one goes through a 150-point inspection and comes with a 6-year/100,000 mile warranty.

Our particular Range Rover Evoque 5-door is mid-trim Pure Premium model equipped with features such as surround camera system, navigation, panoramic roof, blind-spot monitoring, power tailgate and an 825-watt/17-speaker Meridian audiophile sound system. When new it carried a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $50,895. The KBB Fair Market Price for this model currently sits at $47,100, within a range of $45,337-48,862, representing savings of up to $5,500-plus over a new model.
