In a classic case of under-promising and over-delivering, Chevrolet has confirmed that the new 6.2-liter LS1 V8 in the 2014 Corvette Stingray will produce 455 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of peak torque in base form when the first of these new-gen "C7" models hit showrooms in September. Those are the highest output numbers for any standard Corvette engine since the car was introduced in 1953 and exceed the 450/450 preliminary stats Chevy had been citing as estimated minimums since this new Gen 5 Small Block V8 was first revealed last fall. For buyers seeking even more muscle, an optional performance exhaust system will raise those SAE-certified stats to an even more impressive 460 horses and 465 lb-ft of peak twist on both the Coupe and Convertible models.

"The 2014 Corvette Stingray’s LT1 engine is a triumph of advanced technology, delivering more power and torque than ever before with greater efficiency," noted Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer. Matching direct fuel injection, a cylinder-deactivating Active Fuel Management system and continuously variable valve timing, this high-tech motivator will send the new Corvette streaking from 0-60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds and still is expected to earn an EPA highway economy rating in excess of 26 mpg.

Cranking out 74 horses per liter in base form, the new LT1 not only boasts greater power density than the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 in the current C6 Corvette, it even surpasses the racing-derived 7.0-liter LS7 in the hot Z06 model with respect to that critical strength-to-size ratio. Chevy also endowed the new LS1 with exceptional flexibility. Fully 90 percent of its peak torque is on hand between 3,000 and 5,500 rpm, while a formidable 316 lb-ft will be present from just 1,000 revs.
