Who Makes Smart Car?

A partnership between Mercedes-Benz AG and Geely Automobile Group makes the Smart car brand. The German company announced a joint venture in 2019 with the Chinese mobility powerhouse, forming the Smart Automobile Co.

The Smart brand hit the streets in 1997, but its vehicle roots trace back to 1972, with a Daimler concept for a city car featuring a tiny footprint in response to urban congestion and air pollution. Today, the European lineup of 2-seat electric cars includes the Smart EQ Fortwo coupe and cabrio. The company is taking orders for the Smart #1, its all-new and all-electric sub-compact SUV.

New Smart cars are no longer available in the United States; the most recent model year is 2019.
