The company was founded in 1944 in South Korea as the Kyungsung Precision Industry, which made steel tubing and bicycle parts. It shifted its focus to vehicles, unveiling its first passenger car, the Brisa, in 1974. In 1998, Kia became part of Hyundai Motor Co.
Kia sells gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. In 2020, the company said it would shift away from gas-powered vehicles with a strategy that transitions the company to an electric vehicle-focused brand.
