Positive Review
I recently bought a 39k miles 2003 Z4 2.5. I was originally intent on the 3.0 version until I drove the 2.5 with Sport Package. It's all the power and handling I (and most people) will need for a pleasurable BMW driving experience. Accelleration is 0-60 in about 7 seconds and top speed is rated at 146 MPH. Honestly, who needs more than that for most driving? On top of that, I recently got 33MPG on a 150 mile day trip which is remarkable considering the car's performance. Also, when buying, you really need to make sure you get the Sport and Premium Pacakges. They include all the goodies to make driving your Z4 the most enjoyable experience possible. (Not to mention helping you with resale value when that day comes.) For the money (middle of the road expense for a roadster), the Z4 probably gives you the best value on the market. It's a HUGE step up from any Z3 in every way, and you can get a really good Z4 for around $16-20k which is a bargain at less than half the original selling price. Not only that, but if you read on to all the reviews on Kelley, the engines in the Z4 are time-tested and pretty much bulletproof in terms of repair issues. Personally, I prefer a manual transmission, and I have heard there can be problems with the Steptronic and SMG versions if that's your preference. For wind in your hair fun, classic two seater performance and pinache, you won't do better than a clean, low miles Z4. Good luck with your search!
Critical Review
I've owned many roadsters and sports cars however this car was unacceptable when it came to ride comfort and noise. Of course, sports cars aren't going to ride like a Rolls Royce but I couldn't take this car anywhere over 100 miles from my house because the ride was so bad.

Beautiful car, garage only storage, red leather seats, brand new convertible top! Has been taken care of and looks almost brand new.
Great performance, stylish, sporty, modifiable.
Little comfort, repairs can be costly.
Awesome performance and fun to drive. Head turning style and stands out. repair bills can be expensive over time but overall she’s a keeper.
Beautiful, quick, puts a smile on your face
Gas mileage, needs TLC to last
Picked this car up July ‘23. Since then, have replaced struts and shocks with Bilstein B6 HDs, replaced motor mounts, and rod bearings. Replaced stock exhaust with Stromung cans, and added an Evolve carbon fiber CAI. This thing is scary quick for my driving skills but a ton of fun especially in twisties. I ran it “hard” (driving skills considered) through Texas’ famous “Twisted Sisters” twice and each time is just downright awesome. It’s not a Porsche, it it’s not meant to be with it’s front engine rear wheel drive configuration and 50/50 weight distribution that puts the driver at the fulcrum of its pivot axis. A thrilling drivers car that looks as good today as the day they rolled off the assembly line. Sure to be a car that if taken care of will bring years of fun. No complaints here for a car of this caliber for under $20k. The infamous 3.2L S54 begs to rev and delivers continuous power throughout the rpm range. Just point and shoot. I owned a ‘94 Vette and it couldn’t hold a candle to this little rocket.
Fun, well designed, spirited and great looking!
Only holds two people... is that bad?
An Awesome, fun and great car to own. If well maintained, it's a very reliable car. Its always a joy to drive. Gets reasonably good mileage, and incredibly for its age, still turns heads.
Fast, powerful
Terrible electric steering unit failed twice.
Great car. Until 25K miles and the electric steering starts going out. Very common issue, but BMW denies there are issues and of course, no recalls. The price to repair with a new electric steering unit... $6K and at 73K miles it is going out again. Unfortunately I only had a 2 year 24K mile warranty on this electric steering.
Great on gas, fast response. Lots of options.
If you do not keep with the oil changes and upkeep
This is and always will be a fun car. Great handling when you need it. Fast response. Upkeep isn't complicated. As long as you follow up with the needs of the car. She can Cruise along the coastline and she's the devil on the highway. Great on gas. Because it's lightweight. Good trunk room. And you can spot her in a parking lot right away. Slick style.
Repeating what almost everyone says here, this car is incredibly fun to drive and has all the power and handling most of us will ever want or use. With the top down - in north Florida, always unless raining - 60 feels like 70 and so I typically drive slower than I do in my work F-150 truck, where I am insulated from the road - and feeling alive. It has plenty of speed to get away from the pack in traffic. My car had 118k miles on it when I bought it and the price was less than $10k. It has some needed work, but is very clean and runs perfectly. I agree that the styling is not dated though the car is 18 years old, and I think uniquely but classically beautiful. Heads turn and the only problem is I'm and older guy with white hair, and I don't mean George Clooney. I am not too sexy for my car!
Fun to drive easy to handle
Small
Very easy for me to maintain. Fast smooth and I get compliments everyday. When I first bought it she was rough but I’ve cleaned her up and now she is physically capable of going anywhere I want to take it. It is small but I don’t have kids. Custom seats for more comfort. Aftermarket double don conversion. I love my car.
