Pros

  • Engaging driving experience
  • Luxurious interior
  • Modern tech features

Cons

  • Compromised cargo space
  • Styling isn’t for everyone
  • Expensive

What's New?

  • Gesture Control removed from Premium Package
  • More leather color options

The BMW X4 is part of the slowly growing SUV “coupe” trend. A coupe is traditionally defined as a car with two doors, but a segment of SUVs with sloping rooflines offer coupe-like styling with a measure of SUV practicality.

The BMW X4 is mechanically similar to the more mainstream X3, but its sportier body, standard AWD, and standard M Sport suspension add to its engaging driving experience. However, that sporty roofline means less cargo space than the X3. The chief rivals of the X4 are the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and Audi Q5 Sportback.

2023 BMW X4 Pricing

2023 BMW X4 pricing starts at $40,980 for the X4 xDrive30i Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $55,195 when new. The range-topping 2023 X4 M40i Sport Utility 4D starts at $52,949 today, originally priced from $66,395.

KBB Fair Purchase Price (national avg.)

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2023 BMW X4 models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the BMW X4

As with most BMW models, the driving experience is one of the highlights of the X4. A lineup of muscular engines mated to a well-tuned chassis with standard M Sport suspension makes for a more exciting drive than the average SUV.

The 4-cylinder BMW xDrive30i model strikes a nice balance of performance and efficiency. It should be noted that it still has a below-average fuel economy rating for a compact luxury SUV; nevertheless, it’s the most efficient option in the X4 lineup. This is the right pick for most drivers.

Drivers looking for more muscle without the price going through the roof will be interested in the M40i. This is the entry-level to the turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. It packs an impressive punch, and it’s a significant performance upgrade over the base model and only slightly less fuel-efficient, thanks to the mild-hybrid system.

Drivers with a big appetite for performance in a luxury SUV should consider the X4 M. The X4 M delivers true sports car-like performance in an SUV with a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds (3.7 seconds with the Competition Package). Frankly, the X4 M is overkill for most luxury SUV shoppers, but it’s worth every penny for the enthusiast with a big budget.

Looking for a sporty drive without splurging on the X4 M? The Dynamic Handling Package is optional on the X4 xDrive30i and standard on the M40i. It sharpens the driving experience with M Sport brakes and Dynamic Damper Control, which can adjust the suspension in real time based on driving conditions. This also improves comfort by providing a softer ride on rough roads.

Interior Comfort

The interior design of the X4 is clean, uncluttered, and upscale. If you appreciate the simplicity of a proper driver’s car, then you’ll like the understated luxury of the X4’s cabin. Some rivals are more opulent, but the inside of the X4 is comfortable and high-tech, and the controls are easy to use.

That sloping roofline that’s one of the main selling points of the X4 does cut into interior space. The X4 has less rear-seat headroom than the X3, and the cargo space is unimpressive for an SUV of this size. If you won’t have passengers in the back regularly, it’s still a reasonably practical SUV with more cargo space than a sedan.

A wide range of interior options makes this cabin pretty customizable. You can go the conservative route with black leather or SensaTec. Still, there are some more adventurous interior color options like Tacora Red and Cognac with contrast stitching if you’re looking for something different. Interior trim options include aluminum, open-pore wood, and carbon fiber.

Exterior Styling

The exterior of the BMW X4 wears the BMW SUV design language but with the sloping roofline of a coupe. The whole “SUV coupe” idea is a bit controversial, and the look may not be for everyone. But if you’re into coupe-like SUVs, you’ll like the sleek aesthetics of the X4.

The look of the X4 changes a bit depending on whether it has the M Sport package, which is optional on the xDrive30i and standard on every other X4. The M Sport package has an aerodynamic body kit, while the standard X4 has a bit of a rugged personality with body cladding and faux skid plates.

The size of the BMW X4 is about average for a compact luxury SUV. It’s about the same size as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, and Audi Q5 Sportback.

Favorite Features

1. Sleek Roofline
The side profile of the BMW X4 doesn’t look like an average SUV. The sloping roofline gives it a sporty, coupe-like look, backed up by its exciting range of engines and standard M Sport suspension.

2. iDrive Infotainment System
The standard iDrive infotainment system in the X4 boasts a 12.3-inch screen that you can control via touchscreen or a rotary dial. It’s loaded with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, HD Radio, navigation, and an optional Harman Kardon premium audio system.

3. Premium Package
This option package adds more luxury to the X4. Available for the xDrive30i and M40i, it adds a heated steering wheel, heated seats, lumbar control for the driver’s seat, and Comfort Access keyless entry. On the M40i model, it also adds a head-up display.

4. M Sport Package
This option package for the xDrive30i model adds an appealing appearance package to the X4. This is ideal for drivers who want a sporty look but can live without the 6-cylinder engine. It brings an aerodynamic body kit, Shadowline exterior trim, sportier wheels, and an M steering wheel.

5. Driving Assistance Professional Package
Add some extra driver assistance tech features to the X4 with this option package. It adds Extended Traffic Jam Assistant and Active Driving Assistant Pro to make highway driving nearly effortless. However, it’s only available for the X4 M.

6. X4 M
The X4 M is for the driver who wants a luxury SUV that drives like a genuine sports car. The exciting twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine under the hood rockets from 0-60 mph in as little as 3.7 seconds if you opt for the 503-horsepower Competition Package.

Engine & Transmission

You can get the BMW X4 with a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine, both turbocharged. The base 4-cylinder in the xDrive30i model is the most fuel-efficient option and delivers more-than-adequate power and torque for most drivers.

The 6-cylinder is available in three different tunings. It starts with the M40i model, which brings a significant upgrade in power and torque compared to the base engine without much of a fuel economy penalty.

The X4 M uses a more powerful version of the 6-cylinder engine, and adding the Competition Package pushes it to over 500 horsepower.

Every X4 has all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
