The BMW X2 is a small luxury SUV that drives as a BMW should. It has an eager base engine, agile handling, and rewarding feedback for the driver in all driving situations. Some SUVs are a little comfier and roomier, but few in this class are as enjoyable to drive as the X2.
BMW calls the X2 a “Sports Activity Coupe.” Normal people call it a subcompact luxury SUV. In that vein, the X2 competes with the likes of the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and BMW’s own X1, which is a bit more practical.
Its relatively high starting price and compromised space for cargo and rear passengers means the X2 isn’t the most practical or value-conscious choice in its segment. However, its fun-to-drive character makes up for its shortcomings. If you like the idea of a small SUV that drives like a sport sedan, this could be the SUV for you.
A new Edition GoldPlay appearance package is available for the 2023 BMW X2. Unfortunately, the sporty, 302-horsepower BMW X2 M35i model will not return for 2023.
2023 BMW X2 pricing starts at $27,673 for the X2 sDrive28i Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $37,595 when new. The range-topping 2023 X2 xDrive28i Sport Utility 4D starts at $29,522 today, originally priced from $39,595.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2023 BMW X2 models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
Drivers who appreciate the engagement of a German sport sedan will be pleasantly surprised by how the front-wheel-drive (FWD) BMW X2 behaves. Its eager turbocharged inline-4 engine and agile handling make for rewarding driving dynamics. Three different drive modes (Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport) allow you to customize your drive to your liking.
Adding all-wheel drive with the xDrive28i model gives the X2 better all-weather traction and provides this SUV with quicker acceleration. This is a good upgrade if you live in a snowy climate or you want to achieve highway speeds a little faster.
The fun driving experience comes at the expense of silky smooth comfort. On top of the short wheelbase, this SUV is tuned a little more for performance than comfort. The result is a slightly rough ride for a luxury SUV. If a smooth, comfortable ride is more important to you than canyon-carving handling, you might be better off with one of the X2’s rivals.
Since this is the second most affordable SUV in the BMW lineup after the X1, the X2 has an interior that might seem cheap by luxury SUV standards. Some entry-level SUVs from competing luxury brands like the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 have notably nicer interiors.
That said, the X2 has very comfortable and roomy front seats. The driver’s seat is an excellent place to be, with all the controls comfortably within reach. SensaTec faux leather seats are standard, and Dakota Leather seats are optional in four colors, including Magma Red.
The X2 also has an excellent infotainment system with a base 8.8-inch screen and an optional 10.25-inch screen. We love that it comes standard with navigation, and standard Android Auto (alongside Apple CarPlay) is an excellent addition for the 2023 model year.
The back seats and cargo area in the X2 are a little tight, even for its size. The boxier BMW X1 offers more usable interior space.
The BMW X2 is a sleek and stylish luxury SUV. It has a sporty look that hints at its enjoyable driving experience. If you like the idea of a premium SUV that’s not too boxy, you’ll appreciate the flowing lines of the X2.
The M Sport package makes the X2 look even sportier with an aerodynamic body kit, bigger wheels, and Shadowline exterior trim. A new Edition GoldPlay package gives you a similar appearance package, but with the addition of unique wheels with gold highlights.
The BMW X2 is quite small, even by subcompact luxury SUV standards. It’s about the same size as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. The Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, and even the BMW X1 are all a little bigger.
EDITION GOLDPLAY
This unique new package available for the 2023 X2 has M Sport seats with special upholstery, M Sport suspension, M Sport steering, gold-trimmed wheels, and exclusive available San Remo Green Metallic paint.
IDRIVE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM
The standard 8.8-inch screen and the optional 10.25-inch screen are both feature-rich and easy to use. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and navigation all come standard.
As you might expect from a luxury SUV, the BMW X2 comes pretty well-equipped with features, even at the base level.
Standard features on the sDrive28i model include 18-inch alloy wheels, satin aluminum line exterior trim, a power liftgate, SensaTec faux leather sport seats, an Anthracite headliner, and Driving Dynamics Control with three drive modes (Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport).
The standard infotainment system in the X2 is the iDrive system with an 8.8-inch screen loaded with navigation, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. Also standard is a 10-speaker audio system.
As for standard safety tech features, it comes with forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, speed limit info, front and rear parking sensors, and a backup camera.
Upgrading to the xDrive28i trim adds all-wheel drive, but that’s it. Other than that, it has the same standard and optional features as the front-wheel-drive sDrive28i trim.
A few option packages are available for the X2 that add some desirable features. The reasonably affordable Convenience Package ($2,250) adds power-folding mirrors, a panoramic moonroof, a universal garage door opener, Comfort Access keyless entry, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, and lumbar support.
If you’re looking for something more luxurious, the Premium Package ($3,650) is what you’re looking for. It adds all of the contents of the Convenience Package plus heated front seats, a head-up display, and the bigger 10.25-inch infotainment screen.
The M Sport Package ($4,050) adds a sporty appearance package inside and out. It has an aerodynamic body kit, Shadowline exterior trim, an M steering wheel, a few sporty interior trim options, and sporty 19-inch wheels. On the performance side, it has a sport-tuned transmission, and you can add M Sport suspension for an extra $400.
New for the 2023 model year is the Edition GoldPlay package ($4,350). This is primarily an appearance package that has an aerodynamic body kit similar to the one on the M Sport package, plus unique wheels with gold highlights, M Sport front seats, an M steering wheel, black perforated leather seats with gold stitching, dark graphite matte interior trim, “Edition” door sills, and an available San Remo Green Metallic paint color exclusive to the Edition GoldPlay model.
A few individual options you can add ala carte include adaptive cruise control, a moonroof, wireless charging, roof rails, and various options for wheels, interior trim, and paint colors.
The base engine in the BMW X2 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. These are healthy numbers for a base engine in this class, and it makes the X2 a pleasure to drive. The fuel economy is about average for its class.
The sDrive28i model has front-wheel drive, and the xDrive28i model has all-wheel drive. Both use an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
