Positive Review
I have always been a BMW fan/owner. Although they are not the best in terms of reliability (mostly electrical), it'd definitely help you remove whatever burden you carry in life, the moment you start driving it. Acceleration, handling, feeling are race car experience. If you have kid and still enjoy spirit driving, nothing beat this 4 doors machine. I used to own a 911 and had to let it go after having a kid. Now I have found something which is faster which the whole family can comfortably enjoy together. Definitely worth the buy especially now pricing is at its lowest(found mine with 69K miles with rare Oxford Green, fully loaded, extremely well kept for only $18K). Don't worry about the potential high maintenance. You have saved a lot already getting it used as the guy before you had to throw out 80 larges for it.

Ive owned more then 30 cars in the past 41years! This is by far the best car Ive ever had the pleasure of owning/driving! 23year old and still can keep up with everything on the street while taking my 2yo daughter to the park or my wife out to dinner! Even the valet drivers are smiling when I hand them the key! Its truly an impressive vehicle
Everything
Nothing
Owned it for 10 years and has been more reliable then anticipated and way more fun then any other car driven. If you've never driven an E39 M5... put it on your bucket list. Was worlds fastest sedan for a good reason!

Before this vehicle I daily drove a 1998 e36 M3 convertible. The M5 is much more comfortable and much faster on the highway. Power and handling are exceptional. Exhaust note is amazing. I love my new daily driver, even though it’s coming up on 20 years. Updated head unit to Android with touch screen, full Bluetooth integration, backup camera, more OBC function than original, and more features than newer stock BMW since I can install apps and change settings. I picked up this vehicle for $10k and have spent another $8k on new wheels, tires, radio upgrade, projector headlights with angel eyes, wood trim and shift knob, larger rearview mirror, backup camera, European arm rest and a few other minor details such as fixing an oil leak, replacing gaskets, and regular maintenance items. Amazing bang for my buck. Extremely happy with my purchase.
Only one thing you can't pass
Gas station can't pass up
The M5 will do anything my 2004 M3 but with 5 People in the car. You have to live it. Check out the utube video with Clive Owen and Madonna, it's hilarious
Unparalleled driving experience--it's an M5!
More $$$ to run than a 525i--it's an M5!
I've owned my E39 M5 for just over 5 months, and it's already completely won me over. Endless torque, smooth gearbox, glorious V8 noises, and even a quiet, comfortable cabin. Despite its release being 20 years ago, it's considered by many to be the greatest 4 door car ever made, and I would have to agree. My only complaints are in the running cost department...17mpg average is not great (to be expected from a 400hp V8 though), and while I haven't had any major expensive mechanical problems, it seems like there's always some new little problem (sensors, bearings, etc). Worth every penny though especially at current values. Buy one now before they keep appreciating!
It is car ULTIMATE DRIVING Machine
No spare tire, and that is all
If I drive this car, I just want to keep going and going. It is the most amazing car I have ever owned ( at least 30) Japanese cars are much more reliable, american cars will always give more for the money but not as good as japanese brands German cars are by far the most advanced and desired anywher in the world....although not that reliable This specific car is the best car ever built.,. You can drive it in excess of 150mph and it feels tight, solid, under control. I have beaten very recent Camaro s in the real world. I also own a S600 V!2 MERc. well the M5 is a much much better car if you like to drive. Merc s are better if you will be driven I have been offered 25000 dlls on the spot, and I said NO!! if possible, get one, You will never repent
Very Fast, Handling, Sounds Great, Get Compliments
Fuel Consumption, High Maintenance, Eats Tires
Bought the car with 69k miles (now has 91k) and it makes me smile every time I drive it. Good for twisty roads with it's LSD and perfect amount of under-steer at the limit. Very controllable once the rear end steps out.. can powerslide all day long. The variable valve timing kicks in at about 1700 rpm and then it pulls hard all the way through 7k. On a dry day with good tires, you can just barely get all the power down in 1st. Rear tires will be lucky to last 10k miles. Long highway cruises are fine even with the 18" rims. Gets 16-17 mpg average, with 24 mpg high doing 70 mph. I drive it in the winter too (in a place that gets 200+ in/year)... it handles very well with a set of winter tires and the LSD. Turning sport mode on sharpens up the throttle to the point where it's instantaneous. 3rd gear roll @ 60 mph will still slam you back into your seat. The brakes a good and the traction control and ABS work wonders. The car looks great, especially with the stock rims and quad exhausts. I get compliments everywhere I go. The 6 speed ratios are perfectly spaced, minus it could use a slightly higher overdrive (it's geared for it's top speed of ~190 mph). 2nd gear sometimes isn't as smooth as you would like when it's cold. There is a huge difference between this and a 540i or 740. The M badge isn't there just for show. All the components are better. The engine is the real deal.
