The price of used cars, trucks, and SUVs is higher than it used to be. And here’s the cold, hard truth about buying a truck in this price range: It’s going to be old — sorry — “vintage.” However, there are some things you can do to get the truck you need at a price you can afford.
Look for the least expensive trim level. Think WT, XL, and LS trim levels. Second, look for a regular-cab model. These aren’t as popular because they can’t hold as many people. However, if you’re looking for a work truck, you can score a newer model that typically offers the highest payload of the line. Finally, try to find a truck that has a record of being well-maintained.
With those tips in mind, here is our list of the five best used trucks under $5,000. We limited this list to trucks that are no older than 20 years. Pricing is based on KBB’s Fair Purchase Price range.
1. 2004 Ford F-150 Heritage
In 2004, Ford sold the last of the fifth-generation F-150, rebadging it as the F-150 Heritage. It was sold side-by-side with an all-new generation of the F-150. The 1997-2004 Ford F-150 is a workhorse. The F-150 Heritage is roomy and quiet and can tow more than 8,000 pounds.
You might also be able to find the new-for-2004 F-150 in this price range. It offers more creature comforts and has a higher towing capacity, but the Heritage received slightly better owner and reliability reviews. Both trucks are easy to recommend. See used 2004 Ford F-150 models for sale
2. 2006 Ford Ranger
Maybe what you’re looking for is a truck that offers lighter-duty capability. Consider the Ford Ranger. It can’t tow as much as the F-150, but the Ranger is a capable, reliable runabout that can easily handle day-to-day hauling needs. The Ranger is a likable truck that’s easy to maneuver and park around town and easily fits in a standard garage. The 4-cylinder engine is poky but frugal, but you can keep an eye out for a truck with the optional V6. See used 2006 Ford Ranger models for sale
3. 2007 Chevrolet Colorado
The 2007 Chevrolet Colorado is a strong choice among compact trucks. Odds are the trucks you’ll find in this price range are powered by the 185-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. But with that, you’ll get fuel economy as good as 24 mpg on the highway. Its likable mini-Silverado styling and choice of cabs, bed lengths, and engines make the Colorado even more appealing. 4. 2003 GMC Sierra 1500
The GMC Sierra 1500 is another GM offering that was available in a wide range of cabs, bed lengths, and engines. With those choices come a huge range of towing and payload capacities. The most affordable examples you’ll find will come equipped with the 200-horsepower 4.3-liter V6. If you shop carefully, you might be able to find a high-mileage truck with the trusty 5.3-liter V8. The Sierra can tow between 4,700 and 9,100 pounds, depending on the powertrain and layout, but it’s doubtful you’ll find max towing for less than $5,000. See used 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 models for sale
5. 2004 Nissan Frontier
In the “Did you know?” category, the Frontier was the first compact truck to offer a true Crew Cab. Also in that category, the Frontier was offered with a supercharged engine, and another rarity, a crew cab with a 6-foot bed. You could get this 210-horsepower S/C engine with a manual transmission, too. But when it comes to this tough-looking, capable pickup, you’re likely to find one with the frugal 4-cylinder or a lively V6. See used Nissan Frontier models for sale
