Safest New SUVs and Minivans of 2024-2025

2024 Toyota Sienna Limited in white parked near red hills.

To say today’s SUVs and minivans drive safer than those of, let’s say, 15 years ago isn’t nonsense. Not only did the recent crop of advanced safety features find their way into both segments, but the materials forming the vehicle structures of today are stronger.

Moreover, techniques to direct the force of crashes to areas of the frame and body where it will do the least harm constantly evolve and improve. Yes, today’s SUVs and minivans drive safer than those of decades past.

However, the war isn’t won. Crashes still happen, injuries occur, and lives get lost on the streets, roads, and highways every day. Although it represents about a 4% decrease from 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 40,990 people died in traffic accidents in 2023.

The reality is that some SUVs and minivans provide a better chance of walking away from a crash or avoiding one altogether than others. Those are the vehicles on our list. Read on to learn which SUVs and minivans we consider the safest and why.

Picking the SUVs and Minivans: Methodology

We based our safest SUVs and minivans list on those with high crash test and safety scores from NHTSA and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Both organizations evaluate the safety of vehicles through crash and safety testing. We go into more detail about how they conduct those tests below.

Now, we have the list of what the IIHS and NHTSA believe are the safest models. However, we took the list a step further. We narrowed our picks to a specific trim level within each model, providing the most standard and available advanced safety technology and features. We also weighed the level of safety equipment against price to determine the best safety value.

Several safety features we take for granted, like stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitors, and antilock brakes, are now government-mandated. Federal law requires carmakers to make them standard for every new car, light truck, minivan, and SUV.

The government also mandates airbags. However, that mandate only includes the two front airbags to protect the driver and front passenger. Many of today’s passenger vehicles provide at least six airbags. In addition to the two front airbags, you also find two front side-impact and two side curtain airbags. Every model on this list has at least six airbags. We note those models with more than six.

Advanced Safety Technologies

Rear occupancy alert

We are convinced that advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are critical for the safety of you and your family when in your SUV or minivan. In research published in August 2023, AAA reported that 37 million crashes could be prevented over the next 30 years with the widespread adoption of ADAS. Moreover, preventing those millions of crashes could save 250,000 lives while preventing 14 million injuries. Consequently, ADAS ranks high in our consideration when picking our list of safest SUVs and minivans.

To determine the safest trim-level value within each model, we balanced the price against the safety content in the vehicles. We looked closely at the advanced active safety technologies and other features providing an extra degree of protection. Among the active advanced safety features we considered include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. Other features we believe contribute to the safe operation of an SUV and minivan include LED headlights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a head-up display.

Key Advanced Tech in Vehicles

Here’s the list of the more prominent advanced safety and driver-assistance technologies we looked for. Different carmakers have various names for the technologies we list here; however, we use popular industry names.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): Once locked in, adaptive cruise control maintains a preset speed. However, it also responds to the changing speed of the vehicle ahead. As it slows, so does your vehicle. Some systems bring your vehicle to a complete stop if necessary. Traffic Jam Assist is a form of adaptive cruise control. It’s engineered specifically for slow-moving, stop-and-go city traffic.
  • Adaptive Front Lights: Swiveling in the direction in which the front wheels turn, these headlights light the way when taking a curve or making a turn.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): Usually paired with forward collision warning, AEB senses when your vehicle is likely to strike an object in front of it and automatically applies the brakes. The IIHS requires AEB for its Top Safety Pick (TSP) and Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) qualifications, so we don’t cite it in our model descriptions.
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring (BSM): Designed to detect and warn you of vehicles entering the outboard-mirror blind spots on your vehicle’s flanks, BSM uses sensors mounted on the corners of the rear bumper to detect approaching vehicles.
  • Driver Monitoring System (DMS): Employing cameras and other sensors, DMS determines if a driver’s attention is still on the road. Some manufacturers call this Driver Awareness Alert.
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Using a camera or a combination of camera and radar, FCW detects an impending frontal crash, sounding an audible alert. More sophisticated FCW systems include emergency braking in cases when the driver fails to respond to the warning. The IIHS requires FCW for TSP+ qualification; therefore, we don’t cite it in our model descriptions.
  • High-Beam Assist: The headlight high beams are always engaged in vehicles with this system. The system automatically switches off the high beams when photosensors or a forward-pointed camera senses approaching headlights or taillights. It automatically switches them back on when no vehicle lights are detected.
  • Junction-Turning Assist (JTA): Sometimes called “intersection-turning assist,” this system detects oncoming traffic when making a left turn in an intersection. It sounds a warning, with most systems also automatically braking the vehicle.
  • Lane-Centering Assist (LCA): Using a forward-pointed camera, LCA reads the lane marking and keeps the vehicle centered. LCA is a proactive system that constantly makes small steering corrections to keep the vehicle centered in the lane.
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW): While monitoring the defining lines on the pavement outlining your driving lane, a front-pointed camera recognizes when you drift too near one of them. The system will issue an auditory warning if you don’t engage the turn signal. More sophisticated systems have steering assist, nudging you back toward the center.
  • Lane-Following Assist (LFA): If lane markings aren’t clearly defined, LFA keeps your vehicle on the same course as the preceding vehicle.
  • Lane-Keeping Assist (LKA): Similar to lane departure systems with steering assist, LKA doesn’t issue an auditory warning. Instead, also using a forward-pointed camera to keep track of lane markings, it reacts to a vehicle drifting toward a lane marking. It then initiates steering corrections to keep your vehicle within the lane boundaries.
  • Park Assist: Sensors located on the rear or front bumper detect an object approaching when traveling at low speeds. When they do, the system sounds an auditory alarm. More sophisticated systems also provide automatic braking.
  • Parking Assistance: These systems vary in their scope and name. However, they can usually parallel park or diagonally park the vehicle with little or no driver input.
  • Pedestrian Detection: A more advanced version of forward collision warning, this system detects pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA): This alert warns of traffic crossing behind you when backing out of a parking space.
  • Safe Exit Assist: Radar-based, this feature detects approaching traffic and prevents the door from opening while sounding a warning.
  • Surround-View Camera: A series of at least four cameras grab images around the vehicle. The system knits these images together to present an overhead image of the vehicle and its surroundings. Some carmakers call this system a bird’s-eye view or 360-degree monitoring. This is helpful when maneuvering through tight spaces or parking.
  • Traffic Jam Assist (TJA): This is low-speed adaptive cruise control for stop-and-go city traffic or heavy highway congestion.
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR): Capable of recognizing an array of common road signs, this system displays recognized signs on one of the display screens or the head-up display.

Other Vehicle Features Adding Safety

  • Auto On/Off Headlights: Photosensors monitor daylight, automatically engaging the headlights as the daylight dims and extinguishing them as daylight returns.
  • Auto-Dimming Mirrors: Using photosensors, they detect bright headlights approaching from behind, automatically dimming the reflection of those lights. Any inside or outboard rearview mirrors can include this feature.
  • Head-Up Display (HUD): Engineered to help shorten the time a driver’s eyes are off the road, a HUD projects crucial information onto the windshield just below the driver’s line of sight. This projected image allows you to check information, like vehicle speed, in less time than glancing down at the speedometer.
  • Heated Outboard Mirrors: Electrically heated, these mirrors automatically clear the mirror surface of snow, ice, and fog.
  • Hill Start Assist: Sensors alert the system that you stopped on an incline. Therefore, transferring your foot from the brake to the accelerator retains brake pressure to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward.
  • LED Headlights: These headlamps illuminate a wider and longer area than regular incandescent or halogen lights; LED headlights are also easier for other drivers to spot. All exterior LED lights (taillights, fog lights, and daytime running lights [DRLs]) improve visibility and safety.
  • Outboard Mirrors With Integrated Turn Signals: These mirrors have turn signal repeaters located on their outer shells.
  • Rain-Sensing Wipers: This system automatically engages the wipers when it senses moisture on the windshield. The wiper speed adjusts, compensating for the volume of rain.
  • Rear Occupant Alert: Upon exiting the vehicle, this system sounds auditory reminders to check the back seat for children and pets.
  • Rearview Mirror Camera: With the press of a button, the image in the rearview mirror can switch from a reflection of what is behind the vehicle to an image from a rear-pointed camera. If something is blocking the reflection, the camera image still sees what is behind the vehicle, even providing a wider view.

Vehicle Crash and Safety Testing

The IIHS and NHTSA remain the most universally acknowledged crash and safety testing experts. Here is a summary of their processes.

IIHS

Independent and nonprofit, the IIHS gains its funding from auto insurers and insurance associations. Currently, it performs four core crash tests on cars, light trucks, minivans, and SUVs, which were critical to our research. They include a driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side. The side protocol tests both the driver and passenger side; therefore, you could technically call the side protocol two tests for a total of five.

A vehicle can earn scores of Good, Acceptable, Marginal, or Poor. Every model on our list earned the highest score of Good for every testing scenario.

TIP: The IIHS changed its side crash-test protocol in 2021, incorporating a heavier ram. Although the results of this new version of the test were shown in some vehicles’ results in the past couple of years, 2023 was the first year the IIHS figured those results into a vehicle’s scoring. Consequently, testing and finalizing the 2023 and 2024 scores required extra time. An ongoing difficulty of the IIHS and NHTSA acquiring vehicles for testing has slowed the testing process considerably.

In addition to the crash tests, the IIHS assesses other features as they apply to safety, such as headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, and vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention. Scoring for this group of tests tops out at Superior, descending to Advanced and Basic. The IIHS also considers the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) child-seat systems.

Only SUVs and minivans scoring high marks in both the crash and safety scenarios earn the IIHS most coveted safety awards of Top Safety Pick (TSP) and Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+). All of our picks are ones the IIHS named to the TSP or TSP+ lists. The difference between the two awards is the TSP+ winners are vehicles picked for scoring Good or Acceptable in the updated moderate overlap front test; the TSP winners currently have a Good rating in the original moderate overlap front test.

Note: When the IIHS tests vehicles, they treat plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and electric vehicles (EV) as distinct models, scoring them separately from internal combustion engine (ICE) models. However, the IIHS views hybrid models that don’t require charging through an outside source as a trim level of the ICE model. If a gas-powered model made this list with a TSP or TSP+ rating, its hybrid version did, too.

NHTSA

NHTSA is an agency of the federal Department of Transportation. It only performs front and side crash tests and uses a 1-Star to 5-Star scoring system. The highest score is the 5-Star rating.

The front crash-test protocol involves running a vehicle into a fixed barrier at 35 miles per hour. NHTSA combines the results of side-barrier and driver’s door side-pole crashes to arrive at a side crash score. There is a rollover scenario where NHTSA doesn’t perform a crash test. Instead, it tests vehicles for their likelihood of rolling over. Star ratings are also awarded for the rollover test.

However, there are a handful of SUVs on this list that NHTSA has yet to test. Mostly, they are untested new or redesigned models. We include those here on the strength of their IIHS score and note the lack of a government rating in the description.

Safest SUVs That May Still Qualify

With the changes in the IIHS testing protocols beginning last year, we decided to include a list of 2024 Safest SUVs that are still in testing and might still make the 2024 list.

The Safest SUVs

This list contains primarily 2024 models. However, some makers, like Toyota, had already begun marketing a few 2025 models when this was written. Our experience has been that the IIHS TSP and TSP+ apply to subsequent model years if the vehicle is unchanged and the IIHS hasn’t changed its testing protocols. We are confident the 2025 models we include will retain their spot on the TSP or TSP+ lists for 2025. Prices are the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP), including the mandatory factory-to-dealer delivery fee (destination charge). The prices were accurate at the time of publishing.

2024 Acura MDX

Best Safety Value: $51,500 (MDX)
Base Price: $51,500 | Expert Rating: 4.5
Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

This 3-row luxury Acura MDX shines for its roomy cabin and advanced technologies. The IIHS named it to the TSP+ list. Acura provides every MDX with seven airbags, hill start assist, a rear camera washer, heated outboard mirrors, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Also included are auto on/off LED headlights and high-beam assist. Every MDX also provides the AcuraWatch bundle of advanced safety and driver-aid technologies. Included are lane departure warning with steering assist, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist. Stepping up a notch to the MDX with Technology Package gains a little more advanced tech. Front/rear park assist with automatic braking assist, rain-sensing wipers, and AcuraLink with Real-Time Traffic are included. We don’t think the extra $4,700 makes value sense in terms of safety gained. We recommend going with the base MDX. If you consider all-wheel drive (AWD) a safety item, you can pick up Acura’s impressive Super Handling All-Wheel Drive for $2,200.

2024 Acura RDX

The 2024 Acura RDX seen from a front quarter angle

Best Safety Value: $45,700 (RDX)
Base Price: $45,700 | Expert Rating: 4.6
Combined Fuel Economy: 23 mpg

A relatively roomy 5-passenger SUV, the Acura RDX presents value in the small luxury SUV arena with impressive reliability, a well-appointed cabin, and solid resale values. Acura arms every RDX with eight airbags, hill-start assist, high-beam assist, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. LED exterior lights (auto on/off headlights, taillights, and DRLs) are standard as well. All-wheel drive also comes standard.

Every RDX also features the AcuraWatch bundle of safety and driver-aid technologies. These include lane-departure warning with steering assist and lane-keeping assist. Other AcuraWatch systems include adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and front/rear park assist with automatic braking. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, too. Although the next trim level (RDX with Technology) provides a boatload of solid comfort and convenience features, none add much to the RDX safety story. Our value safety pick for this IIHS TSP is the base RDX.

2024 Audi Q8 e-tron/Q8 e-tron Sportback

2024 Audi Q8 e-tron in white.

Best Safety Value: $75,595 (Premium)
Base Price: $75,595 | Expert Rating: 3.9
Combined Fuel Economy: 86 MPGe/81 MPGe (e-tron)

When the e-tron was renamed the Q8 e-tron in mid-2023, Audi beefed up the battery array to boost the minimum estimated range from 222 miles to 300 miles. Audi also made some other performance enhancements. For 2024, the IIHS named the Q8 e-tron to its TSP list. NHTSA followed suit, awarding the 2024 model a 5-Star rating.

Opting for the Sportback will set you back more than three grand. Every Q8 e-tron comes standard with quattro AWD. Among our listed safety features, the Q8 e-tron includes auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, auto-dimming rearview mirrors (inside and outboard), and eight airbags. The list of safety tech is equally impressive. It contains lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, front/rear park assist, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Moving up to the Premium Plus (about $80K) adds a surround-view camera, matrix-design LED headlights, and traffic sign recognition. We’d save the extra cash and stick with the Premium trim.

2024 BMW X2

2024 BMW X2 M in blue next to a water tank.

Best Safety Value: $47,895 (xDrive28i + Options Packages)
Base Price: $42,995 | Expert Rating: 4.3
Combined Fuel Economy: 28 mpg

Redesigned for 2024, the BMW X2, with its sloping roof, is an athletic-looking knockoff of the X1. In Teutonic fashion, the roofline is sufficient reason to reclassify this 4-door as a coupe. While the coupe-like roofline adds a degree of style, it sacrifices some cargo capacity. If carrying cargo is your jam, the X1 is a better choice. However, the new X2 did score a spot on the IIHS Top Safety Pick list for 2024.

LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, heated outboard mirrors, and hill start assist make it from our safety checklist. Among the advanced safety tech are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, safe exit assist, and front-rear park assist. Laying down another $1,700 for the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which consists of semi-autonomous driver assists adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist with steering assist, junction-turning assist, and Automatic Lane Change. At this price point, we’d pay the extra $1,700. It also means adding the Technology Package for a price increase of $4,900.

2024 BMW X3

2024 BMW X3 parked on asphalt at sunset.

Best Safety Value: $50,295 (X3 sDrive30i + Options Packages)
Base Price: $47,895 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 25 mpg

Simply put, the BMW X3 is a blast to drive. Its size, agility, and quickness make for a good time heading to the grocery store or the mountain twisties. The spacious cabin echoes luxury in that understated, less-is-more, German sort of way. Moreover, the IIHS gave the X3 its stamp of approval by naming it a 2024 TSP+. Among our sought-after safety features are rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirrors (rearview and outboard), adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, front/rear park assist, eight airbags, and hill start assist. One added safety feature not on our list is Brake Drying, which dries the brakes in wet weather.

The advanced safety tech includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. Moving up through the trim levels won’t add any safety features. However, we would opt for the Parking Assistance Package ($700), adding Parking Assistant Plus, Active Park Assistance Control, and a surround-view monitor. We also recommend the Driving Assist Professional Package ($1,700), which gains you traffic-jam assist, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, junction-turning assist, and lane-keeping assist with steering assist.

2024/2025 Ford Explorer

The 2025 Ford Explorer seen from a front quarter angle

Best Safety Value: $41,350 (2025 Active)
Base Price: $41,350 | Expert Rating: 3.9
Combined Fuel Economy: 24 mpg

One of only two domestic models among our picks, the Ford Explorer snagged a spot on the 2024 IIHS TSP+ list. We concede that the 2025 model underwent a makeover; however, we fully expect it to be at least a TSP pick for 2025. Although the third-row proportions are a bit stingy, the Explorer continues to be an ideal choice for those who want seating for up to seven, in addition to impressive towing and work capability. Among our recommended safety features are LED headlights, high-beam assist, hill start assist, and rear-park assist.

Every Explorer comes with the Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ bundle of advanced safety tech. Included are junction turning assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, safe exit warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, and a driver monitoring system. Also standard is Evasive Steering Assist, which helps you steer around an obstacle when braking isn’t enough. All of this is standard in the entry-level Active grade. Moving up to the ST-Line trim adds a surround-view camera. We’d stay with the Active trim.

If you are shopping for a 2024 Explorer, pricing starts at $38,455 for the base model. That includes the Co-Pilot360 safety suite. However, stepping up to the XLT and adding the $4,535 Co-Pilot360 Assist+ suite will give you a wide range of extra comfort and convenience features. That will bring the total to $44,800, including the destination charge. When it comes to standard safety features, the 2025 model offers the better value.

The GV60 also boasts a rich array of advanced safety tech. For example, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, safe exit assist, adaptive cruise control, and a driver monitoring system are all standard. Stepping up to the AWD Advanced grade adds safety tech like a blind-spot view monitor and a surround-view camera. Remote Smart Parking Assist is also standard, allowing you to pull your GV60 into or out of a tight parking spot from outside the vehicle. Still, we’d stick with the Standard trim.

The entry-level Advanced trim, stocked with many of our recommended safety features, provides LED headlights, high-beam assist, eight airbags, auto-dimming mirrors (rearview and outboard), rain-sensing wipers, hill start assist, and a surround-view monitor.

Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, blind-spot view monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, driver monitoring system, rear-park assist, and safe exit alert are standard. Moreover, Genesis equips the Electrified GV70 with Remote Smart Parking Assist, allowing you can park the car without being behind the steering wheel. Highway Driving Assist is standard and can accelerate, brake, and steer the vehicle under certain circumstances. Ponying up another $6,800 for the Prestige trim gains you a head-up display. Our pick is the Advanced trim.

Base Price: $47,050 | Expert Rating: 4.8
Combined Fuel Economy: 24 mpg

An IIHS TSP+ for 2025, the GV70 is also our No. 1 pick for Best Luxury Compact SUVs of 2025. It checks all the boxes for comfort, design, driving experience, warranties, and, of course, safety. Its 2.5T Standard AWD trim provides LED headlights, high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, eight airbags, hill start assist, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Among our sought-after safety technologies are standard lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-park assist, adaptive cruise control, and safe exit assist. Suppose you spend another $6,000 for the Advance Package. In that case, you gain a surround-view monitor, reverse automatic braking, and Highway Driving Assist that can accelerate, steer, and brake the vehicle independently in certain circumstances. We’d stay with the Standard grade.

2024/2025 Honda CR-V

2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid.

Best Safety Value: $33,700 (2025 EX)
Base Price: $31,450 | Expert Rating: 4.8
Combined Fuel Economy: 30 mpg

Once again, the Honda CR-V bested many of its rivals by making the 2024 IIHS TSP list. Yes, the prices we’ve listed are for the 2025 model, but the 2025 CR-V is unchanged from the previous year. Since there are no major changes for 2025, we are confident the 2024 ratings will carry over to the 2025 IIHS TSP list. We appreciate its interior space, amount of in-cabin tech, and strong resale values. We give credit where credit is due and named the CR-V our Compact SUV Best Buy of 2024. We suggest you check out the hybrid version if you want more fuel economy.

Even in its base LX form, the CR-V comes with auto on/off LED headlights, outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, automatic brake hold, hill start assist, and high-beam assist. Its standard safety tech includes lane departure warning with steering assist, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Traffic jam assist, traffic sign recognition, and a driver-monitoring system are also standard. Moving to the EX trim adds several convenience features, including blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic assist. All things considered, we’d spend an extra couple grand and change for the EX trim. If you would rather get the 2024 CR-V, pricing starts at $30,850, and we recommend the $33,360 EX.

Built on a smaller version of the CR-V platform, the HR-V provides plenty of interior space and delivers a smooth ride. You might not expect an SUV at this price point to provide an abundance of our recommended safety features and tech. However, the base HR-V LX delivers several of them. They include on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, and hill start assist. Among the safety technologies are lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, and traffic sign recognition. Nine airbags are located around the cabin.

You must step up to the Sport grade to gain blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. Although we think those features are important, we wouldn’t spend the extra two grand for them. Consequently, we recommend going with the HR-V LX. The HR-V is a 2024 TSP+. As with the CR-V, the IIHS hasn’t yet rated the 2025 HR-V, but we anticipate it will perform just as well in testing as there are no significant changes for 2025. If you would prefer to shop for the 2024 HR-V, pricing starts at $25,950 for the recommended LX.

2025 Honda Pilot

The 2025 Honda Pilot Black Edition seen from a front quarter angle

Best Safety Value: $41,295 (Sport)
Base Price: $41,295 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

The Honda Pilot dropped the base LX trim for 2025, leaving the Sport as the entry-level grade. We think this SUV’s rugged exterior styling surrounds the most family-friendly Pilot yet. The IIHS awarded the Pilot a spot on its TSP+ list. Its cabin is roomy and includes a handy feature that allows you to choose between 7- and 8-passenger seating on the fly. It also comes standard with an impressive roster of helpful features.

Nicely equipped, the Pilot Sport comes standard with the Honda Sensing suite of safety features, as well as high-beam assist, hill descent control, and hill start assist. Honda Sensing includes lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, traffic-jam assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition. It has eight airbags, including an innovative 3-chamber front-side airbag. You can add front/rear parking sensors by moving up to the EX-L, but we don’t think that’s a solid reason to fork out another three grand.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 with green hills in the background.

Best Safety Value: $43,195 (SE Standard Range)
Base Price: $43,195 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 110 MPGe

Our Kelley Blue Book Best Buy among electric vehicles, the Ioniq 5, has an estimated maximum range of 303 miles. We particularly appreciate its roomy cabin crammed with cutting-edge technology. We also like it because it provides many of our recommended safety features, such as LED headlights, high-beam assist, eight airbags, heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, and hill-start assist. Not yet rated by NHTSA, the Ioniq 5 did make the IIHS TSP+ list.

Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear park assist, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, driver monitoring system, safe-exit assist, and adaptive cruise control are standard across all Ioniq 5 grades. You also get Hyundai’s semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist, which can brake, steer, and accelerate the vehicle under certain conditions. Increasing the bottom line by $5,600 for the SEL adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, front park assist, and Hyundai’s semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist 2, which includes lane change assist. Save your money and stay with the SE Standard Range.

2024 Hyundai Kona

2024 Hyundai Kona parked outside.

Best Safety Value: $25,625 (SE)
Base Price: $25,625 | Expert Rating: 4.8
Combined Fuel Economy: 31 mpg

This Hyundai Kona is in its second generation, which the IIHS likes enough to rate as a TSP+; however, NHTSA has yet to test it. The Kona’s mission is to provide relatively affordable, user-friendly urban transportation to the masses. It does so not only with style but also with safety. Although the base SE isn’t lavishly appointed, it has the basics. It employs our suggested safety features LED headlights, high-beam assist, and hill start assist. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, a driver monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, and traffic sign recognition represent its more advanced safety tech.

Moving up to the SEL doesn’t increase the advanced safety features. Still, it does open the door to the Convenience Package ($2,200) with junction-turning assist, adaptive cruise control, and Highway Driving Assist, which allows the vehicle to accelerate, brake, and steer itself under certain conditions. Sadly, the SEL and Convenience Package adds $3,550 to the bottom line. If our decision were based on the safety features alone, we’d stick with the SE.

2024 Hyundai Palisade

2024 Hyundai Palisade with trees in the background.

Best Safety Value: $38,045 (SE)
Base Price: $38,045 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

A terrific value, the 3-row Hyundai Palisade provides a wealth of standard goodies, including a few on our recommended list. Among our sought-after features in this Top Safety Pick are auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, hill-start assist, and seven airbags. Also standard are heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. Leading off its list of advanced safety technologies are blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-following assist, lane-keeping assist, driver-monitoring system, and safe exit assist.

Stepping up to the SEL grade doesn’t add anything to the safety story; however, the Premium Package is available with the SEL trim level. It adds Highway Driving Assist, a blind-spot view monitor, a surround-view camera, junction-turning assist, and a few other like-to-haves. However, that addition brings the total price tag to about $46K. Therefore, we don’t think moving up to the SEL makes sense regarding added safety versus value. Stay with the SE.

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe

2024 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT in white near grass and trees.

Best Safety Value:
$35,365 (SE)
Base Price: $35,365 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 24 mpg

An IIHS TSP that was redesigned this year, the Santa Fe is a 3-row midsize SUV. Hyundai also offers the Santa Fe as a hybrid. Among our recommended safety features, the Santa Fe includes LED headlights, high-beam assist, nine airbags, and hill start assist. On the Santa Fe roster, the advanced safety features are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring system, lane-following assist, junction-turning assist, front/rear park assist, and safe exit assist.

Although stepping up to the SEL gains a lot of cool stuff, very little of it has to do with safety. However, leapfrogging to the Limited (about 10 grand more than the SE) adds reverse automatic braking, 360-degree park-assist warning, surround-view camera, and Remote Smart Parking Assist, allowing you to park without being behind the steering wheel. When safety determines the buying decision, stay with the SE.

2024 Hyundai Tucson

2024 Hyundai Tucson in red driving down a street.

Best Safety Value: $28,975 (SE)
Base Price: $28,975 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 28 mpg

Also available as a hybrid and a PHEV, the Hyundai Tucson compact SUV balances practicality, technology, safety, and style. Its place on the IIHS list of TSP winners evidences its emphasis on safety. LED headlights, high-beam assist, eight airbags, and hill start assist are among our suggested features list.

Its advanced safety tech includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, junction-turning assist, driver monitoring system, and safe exit assist.
If we were making the decision, we’d put forth another $2,200 for the SEL grade for the wealth of extra features; however, none of them have any additional safety benefit. Consequently, for our purposes here, we say stick with the SE.

2024 Infiniti QX60

2024 Infiniti QX60 in blue parked in front of columns.

Best Safety Value: $57,050 (Luxe)
Base Price: $51,000 | Expert Rating: 4.0
Combined Fuel Economy: 23 mpg

A sporty-looking 3-row luxury SUV, the Infiniti QX60 is a hoot to drive under any conditions and rather impressive in the snow when armed with available AWD. It launched in its current generation in 2022; therefore, everything feels fresh and up to date. Competitively priced for a luxury SUV, the QX60 is smartly outfitted with several of our suggested safety features, even in its entry-level Pure trim. For example, the Pure includes rain-sensing wipers, hill-start assist, auto on/off LED headlights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 10 airbags, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. Among the standard safety tech are blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking. It also comes with high-beam assist, lane-departure warning, and rear park assist.

Infiniti doesn’t offer any options for the Pure; consequently, you must move up to the Luxe grade to gain a surround-view camera, lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, and front park assist. Blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto-dimming outboard mirrors are also standard with Luxe. Moreover, stepping up to the Luxe includes navigation-based ProPilot that helps the driver steer, brake, and accelerate the QX60 under certain conditions. Our advice is to pick the Luxe grade. In any event, the QX60 is an IIHS TSP.

2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee/Grand Cherokee L

2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve parked amongst trees and grass.

Best Safety Value: $38,290 (Laredo A)
Base Price: $38,290 | Expert Rating: 4.3
Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

A big selling point for the Jeep Grand Cherokee is its blend of on-road comfort and, with 4-wheel drive (4WD), off-road capability. However, the price we list here is for the Laredo A, a rear-wheel-drive-only trim. In other words, it’s the Laredo grade without the 4-wheel-drive option. A sort of back-to-basics trim, the Laredo A only comes in white with two rows of seats and no available options. From our safety features list, the Cherokee provides LED headlights, hill-start assist, and seven airbags. The Grand Cherokee is an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

Among our recommended advanced safety technologies, the Grand Cherokee has rear-park assist with automatic braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Stepping up to the Limited trim adds high-beam assist. Because the move up to the Limited adds more than $9,000 to the bottom line, we’d stay with the Laredo A or the $39,850 Laredo.

2024 Kia EV9

2024 Kia EV9 in blue with snow dusted mountains in the background.

Best Safety Value: $56,395 (Light)
Base Price: $56,395 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 88 MPGe

All-new for 2024, the Kia EV9 is a 3-row, all-electric SUV. The entry-level rear-wheel-drive Light trim has an estimated maximum range of 230 miles. Opting for the Light Long Range extends that estimate to 304 miles. Already earning accolades, the IIHS added the EV9 (models built after January 2024) to its list of TSP winners. The NHTSA has yet to rate it. The EV9 comes with 10 airbags, hill-start assist, auto on/off LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Included in the EV9’s standard Drive Wise advanced safety tech are high-beam assist, junction-turning assist, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and navigation-assisted adaptive cruise control that adjusts the speed when entering/exiting a curve. Drive Wise also provides front-rear park assist, safe-exit assist, and Kia’s Highway Driving Assist 2 semi-autonomous driving system that can steer, brake, and accelerate the EV9 under certain conditions. Moving up through the EV9 grades doesn’t add much in the way of advanced safety features until you reach the pinnacle of trim levels, the GT-Line. We’d stick with the Light trim or spend the extra five grand for the Light Long Range for the additional range.

2024 Kia Sorento

2024 Kia Sorento in blue with mountains in the background.

Best Safety Value: $33,365 (LX)
Base Price: $33,365 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 26 mpg

A bit smaller than the typical 3-row SUV, the Kia Sorento is affordable to buy and easy on fuel. If you want even better mileage numbers, Kia offers Sorento as a hybrid and even a plug-in hybrid. Kia gave Sorento a mild makeover for 2024, which didn’t affect its safety credentials, including a TSP nod from the IIHS. Among our favorite safety features are LED headlights, heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, and hill-start assist.

Every Sorento comes standard with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit assist, junction-turning assist, a driver-monitoring system, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, lane-following assist, and high-beam assist. Stepping up to the S grade adds front/rear park assist, navigation-based adaptive cruise control with curve control, and a semi-autonomous driving system that can steer, brake, and accelerate under certain conditions. If our buying consideration was strictly safety, we’d stick with the entry-level LX.

2024 Kia Sportage

2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid at sunset.

Best Safety Value: $30,565 (EX)
Base Price: $28,565 | Expert Rating: 4.6
Combined Fuel Economy: 28 mpg

Boasting one of the more spacious interiors among compact SUVs, the Kia Sportage is available with an internal combustion engine or as a hybrid. In either case, it’s bristling with technology. NHTSA gave it a 5-Star rating, and the IIHS made the Sportage a TSP for 2024. Its safety features include LED headlights, high-beam assist, eight airbags, and hill-start assist.

Among our listed advanced tech are a driver monitoring system, lane-following assist, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and rear park assist.
Because the base LX trim has no option packages, you must move to the EX to gain outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and safe exit warning. You must opt for the SX trim to add junction-turning assist and adaptive cruise control. The $2,000 the EX costs over the LX is a bargain because of all the other upgrades and goodies it brings. For sure, we recommend the EX grade.

2024 Kia Telluride

2024 Kia Telluride X-Line in grey with a wooden fence in the background.

Best Safety Value: $37,585 (LX)
Base Price: $37,585 | Expert Rating: 4.8
Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

Winner of our 2024 3-Row Midsize SUV Best Buy Award, the Kia Telluride represents everything most families want or need in a large SUV. A kissing cousin to the Hyundai Palisade, the Telluride combines handsome styling with a smooth ride and cutting-edge technology. It maintains a spot on the IIHS TSP+ list.

The good news for Telluride shoppers is the entry-level LX trim comes loaded with many of our suggested safety features and tech. For example, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, auto on/off projector LED headlights, high-beam assist, hill start assist, and safe exit assist are standard. Heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals and seven airbags are standard, too. In its Drive Wise bundle of safety tech, Kia includes junction-turning assist, lane departure warning, lane-following assist, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Stepping up to the EX only gains an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Stay with the LX for the best safety value.

2025 Lexus NX/NX PHEV

2025 Lexus NX driving on the road.

Best Safety Value: $45,895 (250 + Options)
Base Price: $41,765 | Expert Rating: 4.5
Combined Fuel Economy: 28 mpg (gas)/84 MPGe, 37 miles of electric-only range (PHEV)

Even the entry-level NX 250 provides all the safety features and advanced technologies available for the Lexus NX. That’s regardless of the trim level. NHTSA still hasn’t issued a safety rating for the NX. However, IIHS awarded the Lexus NX, NX 350h, and NX 450h+ the TSP+ rating (the PHEV is a TSP). The 250 is the only NX with standard front-wheel drive (FWD). All-wheel drive is a $1,600 option. The rest have AWD as standard. Among our sought-after safety features, the 250 provides auto on/off LED headlights, eight airbags, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. An auto-dimming rearview mirror and rain-sensing wipers are standard, as well.

Leading off the advanced safety technologies are adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with steering assist, traffic sign recognition, safe exit assist, and front/rear park assist with automatic braking. We’d pick up the surround-view camera ($800) and digital rear camera mirror ($200) from the options list. Both require additional packages that bring the total price to $45,895. If the 2024 Lexus NX is still on sale in your area, which is the model year IIHS tested, the NX 250 with the packages that include a digital rearview mirror and panoramic view monitor costs $47,030. We have every reason to believe that the 2025 NX will also earn a TSP+ rating.

2024 Lexus RX

2024 Lexus RX350 F Sport in blue with mountains in the background.

Best Safety Value: $49,950 (RX 350)
Base Price: $49,950 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 25 mpg

America’s most popular luxury model for more than a decade, the Lexus RX, is a blend of elegance, comfort, and safety. The IIHS thinks highly enough of the RX to name it a 2024 TSP. Lexus also offers it with a hybrid powertrain. Providing many of our recommended safety features, the entry-level RX 350 is available with FWD or AWD. The standard features include auto on/off bi-LED headlights, high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. The driver-side outboard mirror is also auto-dimming.

Other standard features are safe exit assist, adaptive cruise control with curve speed management, and junction-turning assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with steering assist, lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition are also included. Stepping up a notch to the Premium gains you front/rear park assist. Our recommendation is to stick with the RX 350.

2024 Lexus RZ

2024 Lexus RZ parked outside.

Best Safety Value: $56,805 (300e Premium + Technology Package)
Base Price: $55,150 | Expert Rating: 4.1
Combined Fuel Economy: 125 MPGe

A luxury compact, fully electric SUV, the Lexus RZ is a 2024 IIHS TSP. In its entry-level 300e Premium front-wheel-drive guise, it’s capable of traveling up to a maximum of 266 miles on a full charge. Lexus also offers the RZ as the AWD 450e. Every RZ provides LED headlights, high-beam assist, and rain-sensing wipers. Among the advanced safety technologies are a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, junction-turning assist, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and traffic sign recognition. Emergency Driving Stop is a system that monitors the driver and can bring the vehicle to a complete stop if it detects that the driver is incapacitated.

The Technology Package adds a head-up display and Advanced Park, which can parallel or perpendicularly park the car. At $1,655, it seems like a bargain. So, we recommend the 300e Premium with the Technology Package.

2025 Lexus UX

2025 Lexus UX in a studio.

Best Safety Value: $37,490 (300h)
Base Price: $37,490 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 43 mpg

As the brand’s entry-level SUV, the UX is available only as a hybrid. Therefore, following the Lexus model designation protocol, the names of all of the trim levels contain an “h.” For example, the entry-level trim is the UX 300h. The Lexus UX provides a standard array of our highly sought-after safety features. Among them are auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, heated outboard mirrors, and 10 airbags. The safety tech includes lane-centering assist, lane departure assist with steering assist, all-speed adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition.

Opting for the Premium trim adds a windshield wiper de-icer, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and front/rear park assist (Intuitive Parking Assist). We’d stay with the base 300h. And, maybe add the available all-wheel drive if we lived in a colder climate. While the 2024 model is the one the IIHS tested, with a starting price of $36,690, we anticipate the 2025 UX will also earn the same Top Safety Pick award.

Best Safety Value: $52,010 (Premiere)
Base Price: $52,010 | Expert Rating: 4.1
Combined Fuel Economy: 24 mpg

The redesigned second-generation Lincoln Nautilus is loaded with the latest technology right out of the box, and it’s an IIHS TSP+. Opt for the hybrid version to improve the mixed-driving fuel economy by 6 mpg. We like the Nautilus for its roomy and eerily quiet cabin. Adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, eight airbags, heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, and hill start assist are standard in the hardly entry-level Premiere trim.

Also included with the Premiere grade is Lincoln Co-Pilot360 Vision 2.2. It provides adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assist, front/rear park assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, lane departure alert, safe exit alert, evasive-steering assist, junction-turning assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera. You also receive a 90-day free trial of Lincoln’s BlueCruise 1.2 semi-autonomous driver assist that can brake, accelerate, steer, and automatically change lanes under certain conditions. We can’t think of much else you might need in the way of advanced safety tech; therefore, stay with the Premiere trim.

2024 Mazda CX-30

2024 Mazda CX-30 in grey with an ivy wall in the background.

Best Safety Value: $26,415 (2.5 S)
Base Price: $26,415 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 29 mpg

The IIHS gives the sassy Mazda CX-30 a TSP+ rating. Its engine, the most powerful base engine in its segment, makes it a blast to drive. We also appreciate its high-end cabin furnishings and standard all-wheel drive. Among our preferred safety features are 10 airbags, hill start assist, LED headlights, and high-beam assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a driver monitoring system, and adaptive cruise control are standard.

Mazda doesn’t offer much in the way of factory-installed options; therefore, you must move up the trim-level food chain to gain more safety tech. The 2.5 S Select Sport adds rain-sensing wipers; however, it’s not until the 2.5 S Premium that you find a head-up display, adaptive headlights, and traffic sign recognition. The safety value pick is unquestionably the entry-level 2.5 S.

2024 Mazda CX-50

2024 Mazda CX-50 Meridian Edition with hills in the background.

Best Safety Value: $31,720 (2.5 S Select)
Base Price: $31,720 | Expert Rating: 4.5
Combined Fuel Economy: 27 mpg

As we’ve come to expect from Mazda, the all-wheel-drive CX-50 delivers a robust driving experience, plenty of cabin space, and solid safety, as illustrated by its TSP+ IIHS rating. If you would like your CX-50 with better mileage, a hybrid version is coming in late 2024. Hill start assist, LED headlights, high-beam assist, and eight airbags are standard. The advanced safety tech includes adaptive cruise control, driver monitoring system, lane-keeping assist with steering assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Climbing through the trim levels is necessary to gain more features and technology. In the case of the CX-50, you have to move up to the top Premium Plus trim with the optional turbo engine to score features like auto-dimming mirrors (rearview and outboard), traffic sign recognition, a surround-view camera, and front/rear parking assist. We’d stay with the 2.5 S Select.

2025 Mazda CX-70/CX-70 PHEV

2025 Mazda CX-70 driving on a street.

Best Safety Value: $41,900 (Preferred)
Base Price: $41,900 | Expert Rating: 4.3
Combined Fuel Economy: 25 mpg (estimated), N/A (PHEV)

We’d typically refer to the new Mazda CX-70 nameplate as all-new; however, it’s basically the CX-90 without the third-row seat. It seems like an odd marketing decision, but who are we to say? What we can say is that it snagged a spot on the 2024 IIHS TSP list as a 2025 model. NHTSA has yet to rate it. Every Mazda SUV comes standard with AWD. From our list of suggested safety features, the CX-70 provides hill start assist, auto-leveling LED headlights, high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, and eight airbags.

Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver monitoring system, safe exit assist, and front/rear parking sensors are all standard. Mazda doesn’t offer any factory-installed options for the CX-70. To gain more goodies, you must advance through the trim levels. Moving up to the Premium trim gets you steering assist added on to the lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring assist. Traffic sign recognition and front cross-traffic alert are onboard. Cruising & Traffic Support is Mazda-speak for a semi-autonomous driver aid that can steer, accelerate, and brake the vehicle under certain conditions. The Premium Plus trim brings even more. We recommend sticking with the entry-level Preferred grade.

2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV in Rhodium White

Best Safety Value: $39,300 (3.3 Turbo Select)
Base Price: $39,300 | Expert Rating: 4.3
Combined Fuel Economy: 25 mpg/56 MPGe, 25 mpg (PHEV)

The inspiration for the CX-70, the Mazda CX-90 is a premium 3-row midsize SUV with an upmarket interior, AWD, and superb driving dynamics. Mazda also offers it as a plug-in hybrid. The IIHS tagged each version as a TSP+ for 2024. LED headlights, high-beam assist, hill start assist, rain-sensing wipers, and eight airbags are standard across the lineup. The standard advanced technologies consist of adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and driver monitoring system.

You can extend the advanced tech list by moving up to the Premium trim, which includes an auto-dimming rearview mirror, steering assist for blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping systems, and traffic sign recognition. Front/rear parking assist and full stop-and-go for adaptive cruise control are also equipped. However, the Premium adds over $8,000 to the price. We’d stick with the Select trim.

Best Safety Value: $50,550 (300 + Options Package)
Base Price: $48,600 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 29 mpg

Receiving a redesign last year, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is chock-full of the latest connectivity and advanced safety tech. Although NHTSA hasn’t rated it, the IIHS awarded it a spot on its TSP list. Even in its entry-level 300 trim, this compact SUV provides a lot of safety features. LED headlights, high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, hill start assist, and eight airbags are standard. Among our sought-after advanced safety tech are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front/rear park assist, driver monitoring system, and safe exit alert.

The Driver Assistance Package costs $1,950 and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, junction-turning assist, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, evasive steering assist, and more. We think that’s a bargain and recommend it.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE

2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 in blue near green hedges.

Best Safety Value: $65,750 (350 4Matic + Options Package)
Base Price: $63,800 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 23 mpg

The midsize, all-wheel-drive GLE SUV is one of those Mercedes platforms that is a springboard for multiple variants. If you include AMG and the plug-in hybrid versions, you’ve got six before factoring in a second Coupe body configuration. We mention this because the IIHS’s TSP+ designation only extends to the gas-only SUV body styles, including the AMG versions, with optional front crash prevention. NHTSA has yet to rate the GLE. Having said all that, we like the GLE for its ultra-luxury cabin and well-balanced driving dynamics. LED headlights, high-beam assist, auto-dimming outboard mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and hill start assist are standard.

Among our listed advanced safety tech, the GLE has blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, front/rear park assist, safe exit assist, driver monitoring system, and a surround-view camera. Also, a system that can automatically parallel or perpendicular park the GLE is standard. We highly recommend the Driver Assistance Package with lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, junction-turning assist, lane change assist, and more. At $1,950, it’s a bargain at this price point and elevates the GLE’s IIHS score from TSP to TSP+.

2024 Nissan Ariya

The 2024 Nissan Ariya plugged in to charge

Best Safety Value: $45,580 (Evolve+)
Base Price: $40,980 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 98 MPGe

Nissan democratized electric vehicles with its affordable Leaf. Its follow-up is the all-electric Ariya compact SUV, which is an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Nissan even dropped Ariya’s pricing for 2024. In its base Engage front-wheel-drive guise, the Ariya delivers up to 216 miles of range. Two-motor AWD (e-4ORCE) is available for some trims. With the North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter, the Ariya is compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network. Hill start assist, LED headlights, high-beam assist, and 10 airbags are standard in every Ariya.

Among our listed advanced safety technologies are lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot warning with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, driver monitoring system, and traffic sign recognition. Some warnings vibrate the steering wheel. ProPilot Assist can steer, brake, and accelerate the Ariya under certain conditions. Rain-sensing wipers, a surround-view camera, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror become standard in the Evolve+ trim. Considering the 70-mile bump in range, many other goodies, like a power rear liftgate, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and the extra safety features, the $4,600 Evolve+ price increase seems quite reasonable. That’s what we would do.

2024 Nissan Pathfinder

2024 Nissan Pathfinder in blue with rock formations in the background.

Best Safety Value: $40,860 (SV)
Base Price: $38,040 | Expert Rating: 4.1
Combined Fuel Economy: 23 mpg

Once upon a time, the Nissan Pathfinder was a true rock crawler capable of taking on some of the gnarliest terrain. Today’s iteration is a family-friendly 3-row SUV with outstanding safety cred, plenty of current tech, and an IIHS TSP+ award. Although today’s Pathfinder retains some of its grasp on better-than-average off-roading capability, its focus is on safety and a pleasant ride experience. And by the way, we’ve found that it provides some of the easiest third-row access among 3-row SUVs. Every Pathfinder comes with hill start assist, auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, rear park assist, and 10 airbags. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning are all standard.

Although the S base model is well-equipped, we recommend moving up to at least the SV trim to gain adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, lane-keeping assist with steering assist, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals. The ProPilot driver-assistance system, which can accelerate, brake, and steer the Pathfinder under certain conditions, is also included with the SV trim. Moving up to the SL grade adds an auto-dimming rearview mirror, navigation-based ProPilot, and a surround-view camera. We’d remain with the SV trim level as much as we like a surround-view camera in a vehicle this size.

2024 Rivian R1S

2024 Rivian R1S driving on the road.

Best Safety Value: $77,900 (Adventure Dual Standard)
Base Price: $77,900 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 72 MPGe (22-inch wheels)

Fully electric, the Rivian R1S is a 3-row SUV. Rivian offers the R1S in basically a single Adventure trim level with the standard battery and an estimated maximum range of up to 270 miles. Additionally, multiple battery and motor configurations deliver ranges of up to 410 miles. Even with its dual-motor, standard-battery configuration, the R1S delivers 533 horsepower and can sprint to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds. NHTSA has yet to rate the R1S for safety. However, IIHS named it a TSP.

Among our highly sought-after safety features are auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, heated/auto-dimming outboard mirrors, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree parking system, and adaptive cruise control. Rivian’s Highway Assist system can accelerate, brake, and steer the R1S under certain conditions.

2024 Subaru Ascent

2024 Subaru Ascent parked next to a white fence.

Best Safety Value: $38,340 (Premium 8-Passenger)
Base Price: $35,740 | Expert Rating: 4.2
Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

There are a lot more good things about the well-stocked, 3-row AWD Subaru Ascent than just its safety resume, but we’ll stick to the safety theme in this TSP+ model. Typically, we advise leapfrogging the Base version of most Subaru models in favor of the Premium trim because there is so little difference in price. It’s still solid advice for the Ascent; however, it’s not as persuasive when the topic is safety. Although the Premium provides a lot of additional content, only a small portion concerns safety. The Base trim comes with auto on/off adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, and seven airbags. Leading off the advanced safety technologies are lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist.

Moving up a notch to Premium gains you heated outboard mirrors, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. Despite the added cost, we will still give the nod to the Premium grade. There is so much other value there (8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and so forth).

2024 Subaru Outback

2024 Subaru Outback Touring in green with mountains in the background.

Best Safety Value: $33,890 (Premium + Options Package)
Base Price: $30,240 | Expert Rating: 4.6
Combined Fuel Economy: 28 mpg

There is little consensus on the debate whether the Subaru Outback is a wagon or an SUV. The confusion originated with Subaru when it switched from calling it a wagon to a crossover. The debate rages within the walls of Kelley Blue Book, as well. The truth is, the Outback falls somewhere between the two. In any case, we like the Outback a lot, as does the IIHS, giving it a TSP award. However, we recommend passing over the Base model in favor of the Premium trim when given the opportunity. It adds less than $3,000 to the bottom line, but it’s a leap in standard content. Every Outback has standard AWD. The Base provides auto on/off adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, and eight airbags from our recommended safety features.

Subaru updated its EyeSight safety tech for 2023, widening its field of view. This standard bundle includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Stepping up to the Premium trim adds heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, a wiper de-icer, and several extra convenience features. To the Premium grade, you can add the $1,400 Optional Package OP 13 with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency steering. Moreover, this package also adds proximity keyless entry and a hands-free power rear liftgate. We recommend the Premium Trim with the Optional Package.

2024 Subaru Solterra

2024 Subaru Solterra in the desert at sunset.

Best Safety Value: $46,340 (Premium)
Base Price: $46,340 | Expert Rating: 4.3
Combined Fuel Economy: 104 MPGe

The Solterra is Subaru’s first swing at an all-electric vehicle and the first of four SUV EVs forecasted by management by the close of 2026. It shares DNA with the Toyota bZ4X. It’s AWD with a government-estimated maximum range of 227 miles. The Solterra impressed the IIHS, earning it TSP+ status. It provides several of our suggested safety features as standard, beginning with hill-start assist. Others include auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, heated outboard mirrors, and windshield wiper de-icer.

Safety technologies from our list are junction-turning assist, lane departure warning, lane-tracing alert, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, safe exit assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. The more advanced EyeSight safety system adds self-driving with driver supervision under 25 mph. Stepping up to the Limited trim will set you back another $3,500 but adds several convenience upgrades, as well as a surround-view camera, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, and scads of extra non-safety features. Despite all the added content, we call the Premium the best safety value.

2024 Tesla Model Y

2024 Tesla Model Y driving on a road.

Best Safety Value: $44,130 (Long Range RWD)
Base Price: $44,130 | Expert Rating: 4.1
Combined Fuel Economy: 117 MPGe

There’s more to the Tesla Model Y Long Range than vegan seats, an estimated maximum 320-mile range, and a 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds (3.5 seconds in the Performance version). For one thing, it was the best-selling car in the world in 2023. The IIHS also named the Model Y to its TSP+ list. With all-wheel drive, it’s a TSP. Furthermore, it provides many of our sought-after safety features, such as eight airbags, auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, and fog lights. Also included are heated, auto-dimming outboard mirrors. Its advanced safety and driver-aid technologies are blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Pop for another $8,000, and you can score what Tesla calls Full Self-Driving Capability. It can accelerate, brake, steer, and change lanes under certain conditions. It also includes full self-parking and Autopilot navigation. Its Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control system automatically obeys stop signs and traffic lights. The Summon function allows you to call your vehicle to come to your location or some other location remotely. All this sounds like a lot of fun, but we advise you to skip it. We recommend the Long Range. Our listed price includes the nonrefundable $250 order fee.

2024 Toyota Highlander

2024 Toyota Highlander Limited in Cypress Green parked next to a concrete wall.

Best Safety Value: $40,665 (LE)
Base Price: $40,665 | Expert Rating: 4.5
Combined Fuel Economy: 25 mpg

We are happy the Toyota Highlander is on this list. It’s a standout in the midsize SUV arena and a top-tier family hauler. Among our recommended safety features, the Highlander provides eight airbags, hill start assist, auto on/off LED headlights, and LED taillights in its entry-level LE trim. Also included are heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, a windshield wiper de-icer, high-beam assist, and LED fog lights. In addition, Toyota tosses in a rearview camera washer. The list of advanced safety and driver-aid technologies kicks off with junction-turning assist, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane-turning assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist. The IIHS picked the Highlander as a 2024 TSP.

Moving up to the XLE gains an auto-dimming rearview mirror, but that alone is not worth the extra cash. We say stick with the LE.

2024 Volkswagen Atlas

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition in Avocado Green with red hills in the background.

Best Safety Value: $39,420 (SE)
Base Price: $39,420 | Expert Rating: 4.0
Combined Fuel Economy: 23 mpg

Refreshed with a new turbo 4-cylinder engine and a facelift, the Atlas returns a better-looking, more potent 3-row midsize SUV. We consider its third row among the roomiest and most accessible in its class. The IIHS validates its safety creds with a TSP nod. The Volkswagen Atlas‘ safety features include adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, hill-start assist, rain-sensing wipers, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Poor Weather Lights feature improves visibility when driving in inclement weather.

Among its advanced safety features are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and safe exit assist. VW’s semi-autonomous driver-assist system Travel Assist can steer, brake, and accelerate the Atlas in certain situations. All-wheel drive is optional. If you move up a rung to the SE with Technology grade, you gain front/rear park assist. We’d stick with the entry-level SE.

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport in blue with greenery in the background.

Best Safety Value: $38,410 (SE)
Base Price: $38,410 | Expert Rating: 4.1
Combined Fuel Economy: 23 mpg

Although the Atlas Cross Sport stands on its own, it has much more in common with the 3-row Atlas than differences. The main contrast is passenger seating: The Atlas Cross Sport has two rows to the Atlas’ three rows. Additional distinctions are that the Atlas is about five inches longer, has about 20 cubic feet of additional maximum cargo-carrying space, and provides a more squared-off roofline. Otherwise, they share the same turbo 4-cylinder engine and underwent similar appearance and content upgrades for 2024. Like the Atlas, the Cross Sport is a Top Safety Pick.

Adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, hill start assist, and Poor Weather Lights are all standard. Also included are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and safe exit assist. The semi-autonomous Travel Assist is standard, too. We’d stay with the SE trim as with the larger Atlas.

2024 Volkswagen ID.4

2024 Volkswagen ID.4 parked outside.

Best Safety Value: $41,160 (Standard)
Base Price: $41,160 | Expert Rating: 4.4
Combined Fuel Economy: 107 MPGe

The estimated maximum range for the base VW ID.4 is a lackluster 206 miles. However, the rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Pro can go as much as 291 miles between charging. Our editors agree on the comfy, quiet, and smooth disposition of this small, all-electric crossover. The IIHS again put the ID.4 on the TSP list for 2024. Among our recommended safety features, standard on the ID.4, are LED headlights and taillights, rain-sensing wipers, and Park Assist, which steers the ID.4 into a parking space while the driver controls accelerating and braking. Other included tech: lane-keeping assist with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front/rear park assist. Also standard is VW’s semi-autonomous Travel Assistant, which can steer, accelerate, and brake the car with driver supervision under certain conditions.

You must go to the range-topping ID.4 Pro S Plus to add a surround-view camera; consequently, we advise sticking with the Standard grade for the best safety value.

2024 Volvo XC90/XC90 Recharge

2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 AWD in Denim Blue parked near a building.

Best Safety Value: $57,895 (Core)
Base Price: $57,895 | Expert Rating: 4.1
Combined Fuel Economy: 24 mpg (gas)/58 MPGe, 27 mpg (PHEV)

Volvo is somewhat confounding but formulaic in its approach to naming models and trims. The XC90 is a 3-row midsize SUV with a mild-hybrid powertrain. It provides a solid array of our safety features and safety tech. Among our preferred standard safety features are adaptive LED auto on/off adaptive headlights, LED taillights and fog lights, and high-beam assist. Other items are heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, auto-dimming mirrors (outboard and interior rearview), and rain-sensing wipers. The XC90 also provides seven airbags and front/rear park assist. In fact, the entry-level Core grade offers it all as standard.

Advanced safety features blind-spot monitoring with steering assist and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking lead off the safety tech. Lane-keeping assist with steering, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and a driver monitoring system join the equipment set. The semi-autonomous Pilot Assist, which can accelerate, brake, and steer the vehicle under certain conditions and driver supervision, is also standard.

You can move up the trim-level pecking order to pick up a surround-view monitor and head-up display, but we’d stick with the Core. The IIHS has named the XC90 to its 2024 TSP+ list, and the XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid is a Top Safety Pick.

The Safest Minivans

2024 Honda Odyssey

2024 Honda Odyssey in silver.

Best Safety Value: $39,635 (EX)
Base Price: $39,635 | Expert Rating: 4.6
Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

You can add safety to the Honda Odyssey’s accolades for its comfort, reliability, and resale values. The entry-level EX provides hill start assist, eight airbags, heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, auto on/off LED headlights, and high-beam assist. Its safety and driver-aid technologies are lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition. Because Honda doesn’t offer factory-installed options for the Odyssey, you must move up through the trim levels to gain more features.

You pick up an auto-dimming rearview mirror with the EX-L grade. We believe the Odyssey is a safe, reliable family hauler with everything you really need in the base EX. It’s an IIHS TSP.

2024 Toyota Sienna

2024 Toyota Sienna in white.

Best Safety Value: $39,080 (LE)
Base Price: $39,080 | Expert Rating: 4.7
Combined Fuel Economy: 36 mpg

Toyota only offers the Sienna with a hybrid (HEV) powertrain, which explains its impressive mileage number. All-wheel drive is available. We like the Sienna so much that we named it our Minivan Best Buy for 2024. It is an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Among our recommended safety features on the base LE are auto on/off LED headlights and taillights. Also included are heated outboard mirrors, hill start assist, 10 airbags, and high-beam assist. Advanced safety and driver-aid technologies comprise lane departure warning with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition.

Stepping up to the XLE grade gains LED fog lights, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and front/rear park assist. With the XLE being more than a $5,000 bump in price, we advise staying with the LE.
