Off-Road SUVs Coming in 2024-2025

Looking for an SUV with real off-road chops but tired of what’s out there? Then you’re in the right place. Here is the next crop of new off-road SUVs arriving now or due to arrive for the 2025 model year. No matter if you’re looking for a relatively affordable SUV with real capability and comfort on-road and off or something a bit more dedicated to the trails and backwoods, there’s something on this list for you.

Here are four of the most off-road-ready new SUVs for 2024-2025 and one rumored to return.

1. 2025 Toyota 4Runner

Price: $43,000 (estimated)

Entering its sixth generation, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner is all-new. It has a bold design, a choice of potent turbocharged 4-cylinder or hybrid powertrains, and all the rugged ability you’d expect of an SUV that shares its architecture with the beloved Tacoma midsize pickup. A wide range of trims lets you dial in your 4Runner to suit you best. There are five distinct TRD models in addition to the range-topping Trailhunter trim.

While the 4Runner defaults to rear-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive (4WD) is available. The 4-wheel-drive system comes with a 2-speed transfer case and automatic limited-slip differential. TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter models come with an electronic locking rear differential for even more control. The Multi-Terrain Select off-road traction control system functions in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. It includes Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control. Upgrades unique to the Trailhunter include ARB Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks, an ARB roof rack, 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires, and a resulting 2-inch front lift and 2.5-inch rear lift. The Trailhunter also gets a 20-inch LED light bar, a 2,400-watt AC inverter, and three pre-wired auxiliary switches for you to add your own gear. The 2025 4Runner will go on sale in the fall of 2024.

2. 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

Price: $57,345

Making its return with an all-new generation, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser marks the reinvention of an off-roading icon, one famously capable and reliable as well as comfortable. Slightly smaller than the previous Land Cruiser, the new model seats five occupants, dials back the luxury and dials up the ruggedness. Like the 4Runner, the Land Cruiser gets a potent turbocharged 4-cylinder at the heart of its powertrain. However, all Land Cruiser models are hybrid by default, generating 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Despite its smaller size and more off-road bias, the 2024 Land Cruiser can also tow up to 6,000 pounds. Unlike the 4Runner, there are only three trims offered, and none of them include TRD branding. The base model 1958 offers a heritage-inspired look, while the First Edition offers early adopters a range-topping limited-run option with a front skid plate, a roof rack, and First Edition branding. In between sits the standard Land Cruiser trim level. It has LED exterior lighting, Rigid color-selectable LED fog lights, a stabilizer bar disconnect feature, and the Multi-Terrain Select off-road traction management system. All models get locking center and rear differentials, full-time 4WD, a 2-speed transfer case, Crawl Control, and a 2,400-watt AC inverter.

3. 2024 Lexus GX

Price: $64,250

The 2024 Lexus GX is closely related to the all-new Land Cruiser but with an even more aggressive exterior style and an upgrade to genuine luxury status inside. It starts about $7,000 above its Toyota counterpart, despite also upgrading from five seats to seven in most trims. Under the hood of all 2024 GX models, you’ll find a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 rated for 349 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The punchier V6 engine boosts the GX’s max tow rating to 9,096 pounds when properly equipped.

Six trim levels are offered, with the Premium and Premium+ starting the range with an all-arounder configuration. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ focus more on off-road ability and features. The Luxury and Luxury+ trims offer all of the premium equipment and features you want in a loaded Lexus alongside the GX’s prodigious off-road ability, including 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio, a head-up display, and advanced driver assist features. For off-roaders, one of the most notable differences between the GX and the Land Cruiser is that the GX is available with E-KDSS (Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) instead of the Land Cruiser’s disconnecting stabilizer bars.

4. 2024 Ineos Grenadier

2024 INEOS Grenadier

Price: $73,100

If the 2024 Ineos Grenadier looks less like an all-new off-road SUV and more like a modern interpretation of the classic Land Rover Defender, congratulations, you’re paying attention! Purposeful style aside, the 2024 Grenadier is also a bit old-school in its construction. It has a ladder frame, solid axles, and recirculating ball steering, among other throwback components. Technically known as the Ineos Grenadier Station Wagon in SUV form, there is also a Quartermaster pickup arriving in late 2024 and an all-electric model known as the Fusilier.

Three grades of Grenadier Station Wagon will be offered, including the base model, the Fieldmaster Edition, and the Trialmaster Edition. While the base 5-seat model is a capable off-roader in its own right, the Trialmaster Edition is the most extreme, with front and rear differential locks, a raised air intake for fording, an access ladder for easier roof access, and other upgrades. The Fieldmaster, on the other hand, retains its off-road ability but adds a degree of refinement for greater city use.

5. 2025 Nissan Xterra

Price: N/A

The last new Nissan Xterra to hit U.S. streets was the 2015 model, and while Nissan hasn’t officially confirmed its return, the buzz is rising about the 2025 Nissan Xterra coming back later this year. Earlier this year, Nissan released a video that included a darkened silhouette that reminded viewers around the world of the Xterra’s iconic outline, and the speculation has run rampant ever since.

That hunger for a new Xterra is a good indicator of just how much the Xterra resonated and continues to resonate with fans of affordable, rugged, and capable off-road SUVs. If the Xterra does return, it’s likely to leverage the architecture of the recently redesigned Frontier midsize pickup, much like the new 4Runner builds on the recently redesigned Tacoma. The result could be a body-on-frame SUV with proper 4WD, a stout V6 engine, and a Pro-4X off-roading trim with upgrades like an electronic rear differential and Bilstein suspension components.
