Predicted 5-Year Cost to Own: $67,050
Compared to Segment Average: -$24,994
For a full-size luxury vehicle to win a 5-Year Cost to Own Award, it has to have a lot more going for it than luxury to spare. It has to care as much about your money as you do, every day. The 2021 Volvo S90 makes its value case with a handsome shape, a roomy interior, excellent power and road manners, standard all-wheel drive, and, of course, safety as a priority.
Starting at $51,500, the 4-door, 5-seat S90 sedan does a good job of putting luxury into perspective. It costs notably less than comparably powered German sedans, but doesn’t short you on real-world worth. The Volvo has the all-weather reassurance of standard all-wheel drive. In addition, the S90 remembers to cater with comfortable leather seating (heated in front) and a cinematic panoramic moonroof. There’s also a 12.3-inch vertical touchscreen to control the infotainment and vehicle settings.
The 2021 Volvo S90 is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that’s both turbocharged and supercharged. It uses an 8-speed automatic transmission to channel 316 horsepower through almost any exercise the driver sees fit. An even more powerful and efficient plug-in hybrid variant called the Recharge is also available.
Spacious, Safe Luxury
The S90 also charts high on stretch-out room, as our Expert Review points out: “The 2021 Volvo S90 large luxury sedan is priced in the same area as midsize executive premium sedans like the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series. But it has rear passenger accommodations more similar to full-size flagship sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.” And the praise continues. “The interior is well-designed, sophisticated, and packed with standard equipment. Beneath what most people would agree is a handsome exterior are several standard-issue safety features, including the partial autonomy of the Pilot Assist system.”
Pilot Assist works with the S90’s adaptive cruise control to keep the car on its intended path. Another standard safety feature is blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. There’s also City Safety, which uses cameras and radar to spot pedestrians, cyclists, and animals in the road ahead. It will brake as necessary or help the S90 driver steer away from trouble.
Solid, subtle, sincere, and oh so Swedish, the Volvo S90 sedan quietly cornered the market for low-cost-to-own luxury value over time.
