Why do we like the Dodge Charger so much? Simple: It’s a proven design, a classic 4-door American muscle car. The Charger is available with five different engines that range from an economical 292-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 to a fire-breathing supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat Redeye V8 with nearly 800 horsepower (797, to be exact). And, oh yeah, one other thing: This big Dodge sedan has just claimed the title of Best Full-Size Car in our annual KBB 5-Year Cost to Own Awards.

That’s right: This tire-smoking Dodge is the least expensive full-size new car to own over a 5-year period, for a variety of reasons. Good reliability is important, Dodge having had plenty of time to refine the Charger during its many years of production. Moreover, the Charger is backed by an excellent 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, a potential big money-saver.

From our Expert Review: “As well as being the most powerful production sedan, the Charger Hellcat Redeye is also the fastest, blasting from standstill to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds and hitting a top speed of 203 mph. Despite Dodge’s claim that it’s the fastest mass-produced sedan in the world, it’s not all about straight-line acceleration. This is particularly true with the available Bilstein Adaptive Damping Suspension.”

The base Charger, the SXT, starts at $29,995. The top Charger, the SRT Hellcat Redeye, goes for $78,595. In between are numerous models delivering classic American muscle in varying levels of force. The V6 models, which look properly aggressive, return 30 mpg on the highway.

Dodge has been building the current Charger for about 15 years. Given the car’s steady popularity and low 5-Year Cost to Own rating, that impressive production run may continue for a few more years.
