2020 Chevrolet Impala: Lowest Cost to Own Among Full-Size Cars

Predicted 5-Year Cost to Own: $49,006

For nine years in a row now, the Chevrolet Impala has been named the Best Full-Size Car in KBB’s annual 5-Year Cost to Own Awards. What makes this large and attractive Chevy sedan such a perennial Cost to Own star?

To begin, the Impala represents a lot of car for the money. The 2020 Chevrolet Impala LT starts at $32,495 (including the $875 destination charge), while a fully loaded Premier flagship tops out at just over $40,000. While those are good prices, GM incentives aren’t uncommon on this big 5-seat sedan.

The Impala’s 4-cylinder powerplant has been dropped for 2020, leaving the Impala with just one engine – a 3.6-liter V6 that sends 305 horsepower to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s a good engine, endowing the Impala with plenty of power and impressive EPA Highway fuel economy of 28 mpg.

Also on the plus side: Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is standard, and lots of modern driver assists are available. What’s more, with its excellent interior volume, the Impala is roomier than some midsize SUVs. It also has a positively cavernous trunk that keeps valuables safe and out of view.

From our Expert Review: “The rise of the SUV has spelled doom for many full-size passenger cars, but the 2020 Chevrolet Impala marches on, oblivious to the oblivion it may soon face. For those who still love the comfort and safety of a full-size sedan, the Impala makes a compelling argument. It comes standard with a potent V6 engine, a spacious interior, and a velvety-smooth ride.”
