Best Subcompact Luxury SUV Resale Value: 2020 Volvo XC40

Predicted Resale Value After 5 Years of Ownership: 34.6%

Even among Volvo’s lineup of alluring SUVs, the Volvo XC40 stands out. The XC40’s youthful, quirky design distinguishes it not just from its more traditional Swedish siblings, but from just about every other vehicle on the road. Also making this Volvo a standout is resale value, with the XC40 bettering every subcompact luxury crossover in its class.

The Volvo XC40 is among the newest entry-level luxury SUVs, and it has felt like a breath of fresh air for the segment since its introduction last year. Just one look at its angular profile and interesting design details like contrast-color roof make it clear that the XC40 swims against the current. And it’s not just for show. The XC40’s boxy design equates to some of the best cargo capacity in its class.

One thing this Volvo does have in common with its siblings is its seriousness about safety. The XC40 includes a host of active features that will keep it within lanes, warn of a collision, and apply the brakes in an emergency. Optional but recommended is Pilot Assist, one of the best semi-autonomous driving aids available.

The Volvo XC40 is offered with two versions of its turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. In T4 form, the XC40 is front-wheel drive and makes 187 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. The T5 model has all-wheel drive standard and boasts 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. We thoroughly enjoyed driving the Volvo XC40, and its perky engine, nimble manners and solid road feel belied its small footprint. Whichever model and version you choose, the Volvo XC40 promises to stand out from the crowd and retain its value.
