If variety and flexibility are the priorities that you bring to the full-time job of bringing up a family, the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica minivan belongs on your short list. Offering you a choice between a 28-mpg 287-horsepower V6 connected to a refined 9-speed automatic transmission or a plug-in gasoline/electric hybrid version (the only one in minivans) that’s capable of traveling 32 miles on electricity alone, the Pacifica prides itself on making it easier to transport big and little humans around along with their stuff — and families, as you know if you’ve ever had one, are defined by the amounts of stuff they have to haul around.

A friend to your family

Built to carry eight passengers, or seven if you decide to go with captain’s chairs in the second row (required in the Hybrid version), the Pacifica delivers livable room for adults in all three rows, and seemingly endless cargo-carrying choices.

Standard Stow ‘n Go bucket seats in the second row (not available on the Pacifica Hybrid) and the third row let you fold the seating flush into the Pacifica floor. This creates a flat cargo area without needing to lift out and store the seats. When not holding the seats, the Stow ‘n Go areas create more extra space for your family’s extra stuff.

Driving the Pacifica

Sitting up high and commanding the road, Pacifica drivers enjoy comfortable seats and road manners that once seemed out of reach in a minivan.

Our Expert Review of the 2020 Pacifica expressed our appreciation of what the Chrysler minivan has become in the face stiff competition. “The Pacifica delivers the kind of ride minivan drivers expect: quiet, powerful enough, and one without unpleasant surprises. The standard V6 has enough oomph to get the Pacifica up to freeway speeds without much effort, and is even rated to tow up to 3,600 pounds, 100 more than the Odyssey, Sienna, and Sedona.”

An environment meant for family

Starting a whisper under $35,000, the 2020 Pacifica sounds pricey, but when you take a look at the standard equipment roster, the story changes. The minivan comes standard with power sliding doors, a power liftgate, 3-zone automatic climate control, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support. And while many Pacifica safety features require moving up the price ladder, blind-spot monitoring — a popular driver-assist that some luxury makes charge extra for — comes standard.

If you are willing to spend, you can get your family some very desirable options. These include upgraded sound systems and a tri-panel panoramic sunroof. Also available is the ultimate benefit for families with toddlers: a built-in vacuum ready to suck up Cheerios.

Voyager model = added value in a lower-priced alternative

Starting at just over $28,000 including destination, the 7-passenger Chrysler Voyager plays the role of the entry-level Pacifica. The Voyager carries much more of the Pacifica than it lacks, including the same V6 engine and steady driving characteristics. It also offers the intelligent use of interior space and keyless entry with push-button start. You’ll also find the Uconnect 4 infotainment controlled by a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Third-row Stow ‘n Go seats conveniently fold flat into the floor to add cargo space. That’s not bad for a vehicle that’s nearly the least expensive minivan available in the U.S.

The unexpected value leader in the Pacifica fleet: the plug-in hybrid

Getting the most value in a Pacifica can be challenging, but it can be found. The Pacifica Hybrid, for example, is our top choice for smart money because it starts under $41,500. But it immediately qualifies you for a $7,500 federal tax rebate and single-occupant access to carpool lanes. You want more? OK, the Pacifica Hybrid also delivers 30-mpg fuel economy. And it offers the benefits of being able to plug in and enjoy a surprising pure-electric range of 32 miles. That’s better than a Toyota Prius Prime.
