For the sixth year in a row, the Ford F-150 has earned the title of the Kelley Blue Book Pickup Truck Best Buy. That’s an impressive feat for sure, and all the more so when you consider that the full-size truck segment is among the most competitive. Every year it’s a battle to be king of the hill. Yet year after year, the Ford F-150 ends up wearing the crown.

Even amid freshened and impressive competition by the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, the 2020 Ford F-150 has fended off rivals thanks its blend of capability, wide range of trims and powertrains, and long feature set. Whether you’re a Texas rancher who uses a truck as a truck, a California commuter who daily endures freeway battles or fall somewhere in between, the 2020 Ford F-150 will be your loyal partner.

An F-150 for Every Buyer

The 2020 Ford F-150 is available in a dizzying combination of trims, engine choices and cab/bed configurations. While the task of choosing the right one for you may seem daunting at first, the result will be worth it because you are more likely to find a truck that matches your wants and needs. And while updates are minimal for 2020, Ford has made some features formerly reserved for higher trims available on lower, less-expensive models. That’s a win for everyone.

At the starting point is the 2020 Ford F-150 XL. This base model is best for fleets and budget-minded buyers seeking a simple work truck. Most buyers should — and usually do — step up to an XLT or higher variant. At this trim, you’ll get features like the Sync3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone integration, power windows (yes, they are still optional on XL models), and the option of, well, more options.

From there, the F-150 only gets better. In top form, you’ll be looking at a vehicle that has leather interior; seats with heat, ventilation and massaging function; and audiophile-grade sound system. The vehicle just happens to be a truck, and the best-selling vehicle in America, truck or otherwise.

A Half-Dozen Engine Choices

Then there are the engine choices for the F-150. They range from the base, naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V6 with 290 horsepower to turbocharged V6 variants and a brawny 5.0-liter V8 with 395 ponies.

A couple of years ago Ford pleased diesel fans by introducing a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel that packs 440 lb-ft of torque and earns up to 30 mpg. For the 2020 Ford F-150, that diesel engine can now be had starting on the less-costly XLT trim. On the other end of the spectrum, the topline Ford F-150 Limited now employs the sophisticated twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 formerly reserved for the Raptor off-road model. That engine packs 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque.

Each engine has its advocates and advantages, but if you’re still uncertain we suggest the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6. This turbocharged engine has an excellent combination of capability and value, putting out 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque while only costing $995 above the base V6.

The 2020 Ford F-150 also remains highly capable. Even with fresher competitors, the F-150 boasts class-leading payload capacity of 3,270 pounds and max towing capacity of 13,200, which is now just 200 pounds shy of best-in-class behind the new Chevrolet Silverado.

Spacious, Smart and Safe

More of today’s F-150 buyers are using their truck as the family vehicle, and here too the Ford excels. In fact, in many respects it functions better than a traditional sedan. Interior space is key among them. When equipped as a SuperCrew, rear-seat space is enormous. It’s also highly functional with a flat load floor and fold-up seats. A human could practically sleep back there, or it could act as a safe space for transporting the family dog.

Today’s trucks are also tech powerhouses, with the 2020 Ford F-150 a prime example. We’ve already noted that all but base trims come ready to connect with your Apple or Android-based smartphone, and extras such as in-vehicle wi-fi can make work more productive and play smarter.

On the safety front, this Ford offers a roster of features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring. The Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature, meanwhile, helps ease the stress of hitching and towing by way of a single, handy dial. As with its weight-shedding, aluminum-intensive frame, this was another way in which Ford was years ahead of its time.

Though the competition is fierce and truck buyers now have more great choices than ever, the 2020 Ford F-150 remains the one that is the most well-rounded, most impressive choice for the most people.
