For 2022, the Toyota Sienna topples the entire crop of minivans to take the crown as Kelley Blue Book’s Best Buy for the category. In spite of the deluge of midsize 3-row SUVs onto the marketplace, the minivan remains a desirable vehicle. Toyota continues to get it right in so many ways with the Sienna. This fourth-generation iteration of the minivan displays Toyota’s cumulative learning from when the first production model rolled off the line in 1997.
What’s Inside Counts
Our testers appreciated Toyota’s useable interior and attention to detail when it came to the Sienna. “It’s so comfortable. Simply put, Toyotas have a knack for being cruise-ready comfortable,” one editor noted.
The seats, even when it comes to the third row, offer passengers an easy ride. Toyota’s Sienna doesn’t skimp on amenities, either, with features including headphone jacks and charge ports even in the third row. The seats’ ability to recline back there rivals some business-class airplanes. While the second-row seats do not come out, the third-row seats stow, providing extra cargo space.
A 9-inch infotainment screen makes connectivity easy and functional, with a modern design aesthetic. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa all come standard. A Wi-Fi hotspot, upgradable JBL audio system, and Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0 — Toyota’s suite of driver assistance features — also come standard.
It’s Got Drive
Minivans are not known for their off-the-line speeds, but the Toyota Sienna’s hybrid powertrain does an excellent job propelling the big Sienna around. “The instant torque of the electric motor and the ‘gearless’ automatic transmission combine to deliver effortless, seamless acceleration,” noted one of our editors. The Sienna gets a combined 245 horsepower with its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and battery-electric hybrid powertrain
We appreciate the smooth handling and comfortable suspension that doesn’t get too far into the floaty category. Like the Camry, Highlander, and RAV4, all vehicles we find very drivable, the Sienna rides on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform. Those are solid credentials.
Another one for Sienna’s plus column is its available all-wheel drive (AWD). If you live in a place where ice and snow are not simply what you find on a holiday card, then having extra traction at all four corners is an important option.
It Works Hard for the Money
If you’re driving a minivan, chances are you have a larger family or a lot of cargo to haul around, and fuel economy still matters. “The Sienna’s EPA-estimated combined fuel economy rating of 36 mpg is amazing for such a large vehicle and about 60% higher than traditional minivan fuel economy of around 22 mpg,” another tester noted.
Based on Kelley Blue Book’s research, the Toyota Sienna has impressively low 5-year cost to own data. Those numbers take into consideration vehicle depreciation, fuel costs, insurance, and maintenance and repairs. Given Toyota’s track record for durable, reliable vehicles, this, as well as a strong resale proposition, helps catapult the Sienna in front of the competition.
Without question, there are other solid choices out there when it comes to buying a minivan, but for our money, Toyota has got the Sienna so dialed in, it became clear that it would be tough to beat. From its interior utility, comfort, and functionality, to the standard tech and safety features, to its fuel-miser hybrid powertrain, the Sienna checks off so many boxes that it tops our list, becoming the 2022 KBB Minivan Best Buy.
