The midsize sedan segment continues to shrink as some manufacturers shift their focus and resources to SUVs. But that doesn’t mean the category is any less competitive with revamped models from rivals like Hyundai and Kia continuing to raise the bar. But the 2022 Honda Accord persists, again capturing the Best Buy Award for Best Midsize Car.
The inherent strengths of the Accord come from its strong mechanicals, timeless styling, roomy cabin, and comfortable ride. Layer on top Honda’s reputation for resale value and low cost of ownership, and you have a combination that continues to be nearly impossible to beat. The 2022 Honda Accord stands pat for the model year. It benefits from a subtle refresh last year that saw a new grille and cabin upgrades.
Targeted at the heart of the family sedan market, the Accord offers a cabin that boasts the kind of rear seat and trunk space rivaling full-size models. Power comes from a choice of turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, as well as a state-of-the-art hybrid that delivers 48 miles per gallon.
Smart Looks
After its last major makeover in 2018, the Honda Accord retains a contemporary look with balanced proportions and a sleek roofline accented by chrome details. This timeless profile is further enhanced by changes last year to the grille that better incorporate the radar unit, while upper trims keep pace with the competition by employing LED lighting.
Proving that the look is a hit, you need only look to the recent changes made to the all-new 2022 Honda Civic. Accord’s little brother embodies a design philosophy that wears well not just on individual models, but across the lineup.
Cabin Comfort
The 2022 Honda Accord interior is an oasis of space and comfort. The dash features a large standard 8-inch infotainment screen that boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. EX-L and Touring trims, along with EX and higher on the Hybrid, also offer wireless smartphone integration.
We especially appreciate the use of traditional knobs for sound and tuning on the audio system as well as the similar analog controls for heating and air conditioning.
Overall roominess is impressive. There’s plenty of elbow room in the well-supported front bucket seats, and the back seat offers an abundance of legroom. The best-in-class trunk space is accessed through a wide decklid opening and has additional load flexibility thanks to the folding 60/40 split rear seatback.
The interior uses plenty of soft-touch materials, aluminum satin finish and wood accents, and in higher trims, leather upholstery. Last year, a new higher-spec Sport Special Edition debuted. It features heated front seats and outside mirrors, smart entry, remote engine start, leather upholstery, and a 4-way power passenger seat.
Compelling Powertrains
The base engine on the 2022 Honda Accord is a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that pairs with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Honda has worked hard to make the CVT nearly as seamless and natural-feeling as a traditional torque converter automatic. This 192-horsepower drivetrain delivers a combined EPA figure of 33 mpg.
For those looking for a more spirited ride, the step-up 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder boasts 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission that contributes to a combined EPA number of 26 mpg. That gearbox uses a push-button shifter in the center console that’s a bit unusual for those used to a traditional lever. The Sport model with this engine is also equipped with paddle shifts that allow you to manually move through the gears.
Honda also offers a hybrid alternative. It combines a normally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and battery pack for a combined system output of 212 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. This potent combo returns 48 mpg city and highway for a combined figure of the same number.
One Smooth Drive
The design of the 2022 Honda Accord contributes to the ease of its handling. A low cowl and relatively thin pillars provide great forward visibility, which inspires confidence. Further adding to the fun-to-drive characteristics is precise steering with good on-center feel and light weighting that makes for a quicker steering action. Braking is easy to modulate with a linear feel and solid stopping power.
Honda also equips all Accord models with the Honda Sensing suite of driver and safety assists. These systems include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability along with lane-keeping alerts and assists, cross-traffic warnings, and road departure mitigation.
Easy on the Eyes and Wallet
The 2022 Honda Accord looks good not just in the flesh, but on a balance sheet. Affordability is one of the key factors in determining a Kelley Blue Book Best Buy and it encompasses a wide range of inputs that include pricing, operating costs, and resale value. In all these areas, the Accord is a strong player.
As mentioned earlier, the pricing for the 2022 Honda Accord starts at $25,470. The Sport model costs $27,930, while the Sport Special Edition stickers at $29,420. The EX-L begins at $31,790, while the top Touring model has an MSRP of $37,400. The majority of models come with the 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder, while the 2.0-liter turbo with the 10-speed automatic is standard only on the top range Touring and a $4,530 option on the Sport.
The 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid comes in four trims starting with a $26,670 base model. The Hybrid Sport is $30,020, while the EX-L stickers for $32,990. The top Accord Hybrid Touring costs $36,540. All prices exclude $1,015 delivery.
The Accord is also a leader in Kelley Blue Book’s 5-Year Cost to Own figures and also delivers higher-than-average resale value.
Put all these factors and features together and the 2022 Honda Accord has all bases covered. Even though the competition is stiff, Honda manages to incrementally improve an already strong entry in ways that keeps it a step ahead. That effort is paying off yet again as the 2022 Honda Accord remains our choice as the Midsize Car Best Buy.
