The Ford Expedition has earned Kelley Blue Book’s Best Full-Size SUV Best Buy Award for five years in a row. It’s a comfortable, refined, full-size 8-passenger SUV that offers excellent towing and off-road capability. And even though the full-size SUV segment isn’t known for low prices, all that capability in such a well-executed body-on-frame SUV provides impressive value for the money. For 2022, Ford made significant updates to the Expedition, reinforcing its position at the top of its competitive set. These updates also help this Ford defend its title as the Full-Size SUV Best Buy, even in the face of strong competition.
What’s New
The changes for 2022 enhance this already impressive full-size SUV. The Expedition rides on a tough ladder frame that uses independent rear suspension. That combination ensures that this SUV is highly capable when it comes to towing, hauling, and going off-road. However, the ride stays comfortable and there is plenty of legroom in the third row. The Ford Expedition is going to be a satisfying ride every day, on nearly any terrain, in every row. It’s powered by the impressive 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost engine, which is available in 2022 with up to 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque.
The 2022 Expedition receives new styling cues that differentiate each trim level. While every Ford Expedition benefits from refreshed styling, standard LED headlights, and updated taillights, there are new trim-specific wheel designs, too. And the Platinum, Stealth, and Timberline have distinctly different styling cues from the rest of the Expedition lineup. The Expedition is set up for over-the-air software updates, which can reduce the need to go to a dealership.
Impressive New Trim Levels
This year, Ford adds three compelling trim levels that appeal to an even wider range of shoppers. The Timberline is the most off-road capable trim level, with 10.6 inches of ground clearance and a heavy-duty skid plate borrowed from the Ford Raptor. It has Trail Turn Assist — the same system that’s in the Bronco — which tightens the Expedition’s turning radius for navigating sharp turns on the trail. Trail Control lets you focus on steering on the trail while the system manages the throttle and brakes. The Timberline rides on 33-inch tires and has a 2-speed transfer case. It’s powered by the 440-horsepower high-output EcoBoost engine.
The Stealth Performance Edition comes standard with the high-output EcoBoost engine. This Expedition rides on 22-inch black wheels, with red brake calipers you can see peeking through the spokes. This edition has a sport-tuned suspension, as well as a dual exhaust. The Stealth Performance has glossy black body accents, including the grille, roof rails, and the headlight and taillight housings.
The ultra-lux Platinum is updated for 2022 with a new mesh grille with two horizontal bars, and chrome accents on the outside. Inside the restyled cabin, there is the SYNC 4 infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen and a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with 360-degree sound. There’s also an available 12.4-inch high-definition digital gauge cluster and a massive 15.5-inch high-definition touchscreen.
Full-Size Safety Suite
The 2022 Ford Expedition is available with a wide array of safety features, many of which are part of Ford Co-Pilot360. There’s reverse sensing, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot information with cross-traffic alert, and a lane-keeping system. Also included is Evasive Steering Assist, which helps the driver stay in control while avoiding an obstacle in the lane.
Road Edge Detection helps you keep the Expedition centered in the lane. Reverse Brake Assist will kick in if the system detects a vehicle or person while you are backing out of a parking space. Active Park Assist aids in parallel parking, using sensors to help get the Expedition into street parking, even if it’s a tight spot. Intersection Assist can detect if there is oncoming traffic. New for 2022 is the availability of BlueCruise, a system that allows for hands-free driving.
Value
When it comes to defining value in a full-size SUV, the Ford Expedition shines by offering capability, ease of use, a wide range of models, and a comfortable, upscale interior. It’s not just that the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds. It’s easier for anyone to tow, thanks to Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0. You use a knob and the rear-view camera to get the trailer moving in the right direction.
The Expedition can carry massive amounts of cargo, but power-folding seats make reconfiguring the interior a snap. The SYNC system is a great way to control audio, navigation, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functions. It even includes the owner’s manual.
You have a choice of two versions of the powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine, which are more fuel-efficient than you would expect. An active air dam improves aerodynamics at speed, also improving fuel economy. And when it comes to finding the right model, Ford gives you more options than ever before.
Put all of that together, and the 2022 Ford Expedition has the capability, ease of use, safety, and variety that make it our Full-Size SUV Best Buy for 2022.
