We established the electric truck category for our Best Buy awards in 2023. The Ford F-150 Lightning won it. When 2024 clicked around, the Lightning remained unbeatable. Now it’s a three-peat for our highest-rated electric pickup, in spite of more rivals entering the arena. The thing is, we’re still struck by the whole Lightning package. The pricing is competitive, it’s capable of traveling a long way before needing a recharge, the tech is excellent, we love the spacious crew cab format, and it’s built by Ford — a company with years of experience making top-rated pickups.

Miles Per Charge, Miles Per Hour

Range, the distance between charges, is a Lightning strength. With the optional Extended Range battery, it can run for up to 320 miles. Every version of the Lightning has two electric motors and all-wheel drive (AWD). The most muscular version generates a substantial 580 horsepower and can zip from a standstill to 60 mph in only four seconds. That would be awesome in a sports car. This is a full-size truck.

Top Tech

The Lightning is one of the most tech-rich vehicles in Ford’s portfolio. The infotainment system offers a large 15.5-inch touchscreen, along with Bang & Olufsen audio setups, and the Phone As A Key feature in the FordPass app. The standard Mega Power Frunk (front trunk) has four 120-volt outlets, plus a couple of USB ports. The Lightning even has the option of a 240-volt outlet in the bed.

A standard array of safety systems includes automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. Ford also offers its partial self-driving BlueCruise feature that works on thousands of miles of freeways in the United States and Canada. The F-150 Lightning isn’t just a well-executed electric vehicle (EV), it can also do the work. Its maximum towing figure is an eminently usable 10,000 pounds, while a total payload of 2,000 pounds is another positive. And under the hood is a drainable storage area of 14.1 cubic feet — about the same size as a Honda Civic’s trunk — which can carry up to 400 pounds.

Bottled Lightning

Ford knows F-150 buyers expect a wide variety of choices and the company meets that demand even with this electric pickup. The base Pro model comes with a crew cab and at a price similar to a gasoline-powered equivalent. The XLT trim adds more amenities and eligibility for the Extended Range battery. The popular Flash trim has that bigger battery as standard, as well as plenty of tech features. Lariat heads uptown with leather and a dual-pane moonroof, while Platinum goes full-on luxury with massaging front seats, an upgraded audio system, and 22-inch alloy wheels.
