Sometimes, a car seems to get everything right. Case in point: the current Honda Accord, which has just secured another Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award, this time as our Best Midsize Car of 2024.
Although sedans have lost market share to SUVs, let’s not ring their death knell just yet. Accord sales, in fact, are way up from last year. Through September, the Accord was the second-best-selling Honda in the U.S. lineup, trailing only the CR-V.
The growing number of Accord buyers must be on to something that Kelley Blue Book has known all along: that a well-built midsize sedan makes a great primary everyday vehicle. And of the ones currently available, we feel the 11th-generation Honda Accord shines brightest. It’s a comfortable and refined 5-seater that backs up its fun driving manners with excellent practicality, a roomy interior, a huge trunk, outstanding resale values, and a wide variety of trim levels, four of which are super fuel-efficient hybrids.
Also notable: This Ohio-built sedan sustains an impressive legacy, one that has seen the Accord win numerous Best Buy Awards over the years and make regular appearances on our Best Resale Value and Lowest 5-Year Cost to Own lists.
Gas or Hybrid?
That’s right, you get to choose between a gas or hybrid powertrain with the 2024 Accord. The Accord LX and EX, the two most affordable models, are both powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 192 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. That power gets sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission that goes about its work in a refined manner.
All the other 2024 Accord models – the Sport, EX-L, Sport-L, and Touring – are hybrids that use a 2.0-liter gasoline engine supported by two electric motors, one that charges the battery and another that drives the wheels directly. These Accord Hybrid models produce 204 horsepower and a satisfying 247 lb-ft torque, which makes them considerably quicker than the LX and EX.
More significantly, Accord Hybrids get considerably better fuel economy. The best of the bunch, the 2024 Honda Accord EX-L, is rated by the EPA at an outstanding 51 mpg city/44 mpg highway and 48 mpg combined. The 1.5-liter Accord isn’t quite as thrifty, though it still boasts impressive EPA ratings of 29 mpg city/37 mpg highway and 32 mpg combined.
In our opinion, the choice is easy: If budget allows, get the Accord Hybrid, which starts at $32,545 (Sport). The non-hybrid Honda Accord LX, for the record, begins at $27,895.
Grown-up Styling
While it’s true that the 2024 Honda Accord lacks the overtly muscular lines of the 2022 model, it’s handsome in a more restrained sort of way. Call it more mature, a shape that retains the Accord’s familiar silhouette and slippery fastback roofline. Dare we say it, but we think this latest Accord has an elegant, almost European look.
But don’t let that confuse you; the 2024 Honda Accord isn’t trying to be a premium European fastback sedan. It’s a practical and efficient everyday sedan at its core, aimed directly at American families with far more interior room than you might expect. A 6-foot-tall person can ride comfortably behind a driver of the same height. In addition, the Accord’s trunk, at 16.7 cubic feet, is the largest in its class.
What’s more, this 2024 Accord has a lowish cowl and thin pillars. This makes for an outstanding forward view and a more enjoyable trip. Inside, a honeycomb vent strip running the full width of the dash adds style to an understated interior featuring high-quality materials and top-notch switchgear that operates with silky precision.
A Wealth of Hybrid Experience
We’ve driven several Accord variants, and we’ve come away impressed with each. Chalk it up to the Accord’s inherent good virtues. These begin with a rigid chassis and good steering feedback, plus a comfortable ride that doesn’t come at the expense of good agility, an Accord hallmark since the beginning.
From the cloth-upholstered Accord LX, which comes loaded with safety features and driver assists, to the leather-adorned Accord Touring Hybrid, a model that pampers buyers with unexpected niceties like a head-up display and heated rear seats, all 2024 Accord models exude a high-quality, well-engineered feel.
And perhaps nowhere is this more noticeable than in the interaction between the Accord Hybrid’s gasoline and electric power sources. The interplay of power sources is so smooth, seamless, and quiet that it’s tough to tell if the gasoline engine, the electric motor, or both are propelling the Accord at any given time.
Just press the accelerator and let the Accord take off like a conventional sedan with more than ample power, letting the car’s electronic brain choose the best power source for the situation at hand. While a handy Power Flow diagram on the 12.3-inch infotainment screen helps you keep track of the power delivery (and see how energy is recaptured during braking and deceleration), we suspect most folks will just drive the Accord Hybrid and let the electronics work their magic.
We’ve said it before: Honda has tremendous experience with hybrids (the 2000 Honda Insight was the first gas/electric hybrid sold in the U.S.), and it shows in the outstanding refinement of the 2024 Honda Accord Hybrid.
Safety Matters
All 2024 Honda Accords, hybrid or otherwise, come standard with the Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver assists. On the safety front, this means they have a forward collision warning system, automatic emergency braking, 10 airbags, lane-keep assist, and a road-departure mitigation system.
As for the modern driver assists, they’re highlighted by adaptive cruise control and a driver-attention monitor, plus automatic collision notification. Again, all this safety and modern technology comes standard on every 2024 Accord, not just the top models.
Available Google Connectivity
As one of the most popular midsize sedans in the U.S., the 2024 Honda Accord keeps you well connected. It has a pair of illuminated front USB-C ports and standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, which is wireless in the hybrid modes.
But the Accord Touring Hybrid flagship goes a big step further, adding a wireless smartphone charger, a pair of rear USB-C ports, and Google built-in, the infotainment suite that lets you operate Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play without connecting your phone.
With Google Assistant, you can ask your Accord to change the cabin temperature or set a calendar reminder. With Google Maps, you can plan a route to your Uncle Bob’s, replete with the map appearing on the digital instrument panel in front of you. And with Google Play, you’ll have access to your Spotify or YouTube Music accounts, provided the apps have been downloaded.
These are all handy features on a fuel-efficient and highly refined midsize sedan that’s built in the U.S. and is doing its best to snag back market share from midsize SUVs, one Accord at a time.
