A full-size SUV is one of the only vehicles that can tow a massive RV, carry eight people and a lot of gear, and be designed to go off-road. Not only is the 2024 Ford Expedition built for this kind of work, it excels at it. It can tow up to 9,300 pounds, has legit off-road chops, and has a spacious interior. But at the same time, it’s refined, comfortable, and uses smart tech to make things a pleasure for everyone on board. And, as far as full-size SUVs go, it has decent fuel economy. That’s why Kelley Blue Book has named the 2024 Ford Expedition the Full-Size SUV Best Buy for the seventh consecutive year.
The Right Power, Seating, and Features for You
The Expedition is available in six trim levels, ranging from the 5-passenger XL STX base model to the top-of-the-line Platinum. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine is available with three power levels: 380, 400, or 440 hp. And if you need more cargo space, the Expedition Max, the long-wheelbase Expedition, offers more room for gear behind the third row, bringing total cargo space to a whopping 121.5 cubic feet.
While the base XL STX Expedition comes nicely equipped, move up to the well-equipped XLT to get three rows of seats and more standard features. The features list gets even sweeter as you move up the trim ladder. You can get heated seats (first and second rows), cooled seats (first row), power-folding and reclining seats (third row), and multi-contour seats with Active Motion massage (first row). Other available features include a panoramic moonroof and a 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system.
There are even special editions, like the off-road-ready Timberline. It has 10.6 inches of ground clearance, a heavy-duty skid plate, off-road-tuned suspension, and 32-inch all-terrain tires. There’s also the Stealth Performance Edition, which has unique styling and performance features. Both models use the High-Output 440-hp EcoBoost, with 510 lb-ft of torque.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
There was a time when full-size SUVs were not known for innovative technology. And a turbocharged V6 powering a truck-based, body-on-frame SUV instead of a V8? Ridiculous. Those days have changed. The Expedition’s tech starts under the hood with Ford’s efficient and powerful twin-turbo EcoBoost engines, good for up to 23 mpg on the highway. Not only is there plenty of power for work duty, but with the heavy-duty trailer tow package, the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds.
When it comes time to park your trailer, Pro Trailer Backup Assist 2.0 lets you back it into a space with the turn of a knob. With the heavy-duty tow package, Ford’s blind-spot information system also considers your trailer. Going off-road is easier in the Expedition, too. Available Trail Control and 1-Pedal Drive manage the throttle and brakes, allowing you to focus on navigating the trail. Trail Turn Assist can make the Expedition’s turning radius tighter.
Comfort, Convenience, and Safety
But those aren’t the only tech features the Expedition offers — not by a long shot. The Expedition comes standard with the SYNC 4 infotainment system. It has built-in navigation, or you can wirelessly connect via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to use your favorite app. SYNC 4 enables over-the-air (OTA) updates and Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices. Ford also offers a 12.4-inch digital gauge cluster and a 15.5-inch touchscreen. While that sounds overwhelming, its vertical format is easy to use and helpful while on the road.
Ford Co-Pilot360, the company’s suite of driver-assist features, includes many advanced safety features, several of which are standard. BlueCruise hands-free driving tech is available. There’s also pre-collision assist, lane centering, reverse brake assist when parking, evasive steering assist, and more.
No matter which row you’re in, the Expedition has a smooth, comfortable ride, thanks in no small part to the independent rear suspension. The interior is quiet; seats are easy to raise, lower, and adjust as needed. Oh, and did we mention those heated, massaging seats?
Value
When shopping for a full-size SUV, value has a different meaning than for other vehicles. Here, it’s understood that the base price is higher than with other SUVs. The value is how much capability, comfort, and features you can get for the money. The 2024 Ford Expedition offers a full-size serving of all of it, at one of the lowest starting prices in its class.
It isn’t just that the Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds, accommodate a lot of gear, and comfortably get you and your crew there. It’s the ease of use, the execution, and the value that makes it our Full-Size SUV Best Buy for 2024.
