Positive Review
I bought a used 2007 A8L with only 30K miles, (like new, not one scratch or blem anywhere). I am a former A6 Q owner but went for an A8 on the recommendation of two friends who are devoted A8 fanatics. They told me to get the L, even though I preferred the shorter version for parking reasons. They also told me to try and get 2007 or later, get the V8, not the V10 or V12 engine. I am tall and my passengers would not have much leg room in the short wheelbase model so I started a search for an L. Finally found one local, private party, and bought it. Mine is loaded. The features I really like are adaptive cruise control which works really well and double pane glass which makes a quiet car interior nearly silent. Gas mileage is surprisingly good. I get just over 26 MPG on flat highway, if I do not speed. Michelins with low rolling resistance and Mobil 1 0-40 wt synth oil all help. The seats are very comfortable and have a huge variety of power operated position and comfort adjustments. The seat massage is surprisingly good, not just vibration but a back kneading lumbar roller. Having air venting through the seat (an option) makes a long trip really comfortable, no sticking to your seat or sweating. Handling on corners is GREAT, that adaptive air suspension really cuts body roll, the QUATTRO 4WD is very grippy in turns and the combo lets you leave sportier 2WD BMWs in the dust on tight on-ramp curves. The A8 is loaded with systems and with complexity, reliablility inevitably suffers. I have the Audi aftermarket Platinum warranty so these repairs will not cost a fortune, but in only 300 miles I've had the tire pressure monitoring system fail (wont read any tires) and the trunk opener now needs a hand push to open. Buying a used A8 in great shape with an extendable warranty is great value. These cars lose value SOOOO fast after someone plunks down nearly $100K. In a couple of years they are down in the 30s. This is the best highway car I have even been in. With adaptive cruise all you do is steer and watch the road. Driver fatigue is very low. You arrive refreshed after a 300 mile trip. I'd have loved to have found a car with adaptive cruise, double pane glass and that had the B
Critical Review
I've owned this vehicle from 40xxx to 62xxx miles. First the good news. It's a beautiful vehicle lots of power and a wonderful ride. The bad news. It will break the bank in basic maintenance costs. Examples of Basic Maintenance costs: Oil Change $158 - Audi Dealer (Synthetic – 8 quart system) Oil filter not available at checkers, wallmart, autozone..etc.. Breaks - $1100. ($750 front, 350, rear. (Breaks plus can do it for around $800 to 900) TPMS – $1150 (Tire Pressure Monitoring system). Batteries in all 5 tires (Including the spare) – Windshield - $400 to $750 to replace. (Oh yea.. in 2004. There were 2 different type of windshields that were used. (I think the cut over was 5/2004 from one to the other but no 100% sure on the actual month) 60,000 Mile service (Timing belt) – $1300 to $1800 If the vehicle has the Adaptive cruise control option, a wheel alignment will run you about $750 And if it does not, you’ll most like need to take it to the Audi dealership to do an alignment as it requires special tools that most foreign auto repair shops will not have (For this particular item) If you’re thinking about purchasing this vehicle, call your local Audi dealer and ask them about the repair costs on these items. Consumer reports has this vehicle on the worst car list. As a general rule of thumb that I started to use. Estimate what you think a repair should cost you then multiple that figure by 5x. (Ball park) If it had to do it all over again.. I'd most likely to with a Lexus LS 430.

Can float like a boat, or handle like a sports car
Gets around 22mpg, time consuming engine bay
If you are wanting to buy a used one, make sure all the timing has been done, it has working air-suspension, the front seat bottoms uncracked (inevitable) and that is about it. One of the more time consuming cars to work on with engine in the car if you plan on doing head gaskets and re sealing the motor. Parts are cheap (labor prices is what kills the deal if unable to work on it yourself) Still pretty quick for what it is, and the V8 Timing belt cars (not FSI) are super reliable just as any old 1.8T, 2.8. Expect to pay alot for one that is in excellent shape. Large trunk, and even the normal A8 (non L) has plenty of room. All American A8 D3s should have BOSE, and they have plentyyy of bass. Navigation is also accurate, and updated discs can be used. MMI is easy to get used to with due time.

Engineering, fit and finish
Few low mile versions available for purchase
I purchased a one-owner 2004 standard wheel base A8 and it is hands down the best vehicle I’ve ever owned - engineering, materials, fit and finish are superb and superior to newer Audi A8 models IMHO. It is very comfortable and is as at ease on a commute across town as it is on an interstate blast across country the latter of which is where it really shines and shows its autobahn DNA. Civilized but dip into the throttle and the all aluminum five valve per cylinder V8 comes alive with a vengeance...not much separates from the legendary “Ronin” S8 spec car. Highly recommended and of course, maintenance is required but if you go into ownership with that in mind, you won’t be disappointed! A+++
Fun , Comfortable, Quick
Parts are expensive if you don't shop online.

Engine needs constant care. Maintenance!
I own a 2009 A8. This is my second one. Previously I drove a 2002 A8L which was my favorite car of all time(I have owned over 40 cars). The styling on the 2009 is a step above the 2002 and the V8 engine has an additional 45 HP. I would recommend the L version as offers a few more amenities for your passengers. The standard A8 is the ultimate highway cruiser in comfort mode. And it has enough quickness and sticks to the road around fast turns while cruising through the suburbs. Overall, just a pleasure to drive.
