"Driver's car if you can keep up with Maint/Repairs"

I've owned this car since new. It still runs and drives like it did when new with ~220k on the odo. It does require a lot of attention when it comes to maintenance and repairs. It is in the garage on jack stands about every 3rd weekend replacing another failing component. It may sound awful and would be if I had no mechanical aptitude or ability to do my own repairs. I find it to be rather easy to work on. There are many, "Boy Racer" web sites dedicated to Audis and there is someone that has already documented, in detail, the required steps for all repairs I've done. And there is a sense of satisfaction in doing my own work. I spent about $300 on clutch parts and tools. A reputable shop or dealer will charge up to $1800 for the clutch replacement. Bottom line: I would not recommend this car for those that can't do some of their own repairs. I would highly recommend this car for those that enjoy driving an older well balanced machine that may require dirty hands and scratched knuckles every few weeks keeping it roadworthy. My son now has an A4 and he has learned a lot about how to diagnose and do his own repairs too. I good car for this type of learning experience.

"Too costly to own when they are older"

I bought my Audi A4 when it was 3 yrs old. I just sold it after owning it for seven years. I take extremely good care of cars. This car beat me up. It ran great for a few months at a time, but when things break, many things break. Mechanics are not excited to work on it. Everything costs a small fortune, even plastic parts. Annoying things break like the retracting cup holder and the glovebox door. Audi is extremely proud of their replacement parts. There are other brands out there with better quality and longevity that are not as expensive to maintain.

Pros

Sleeper Wagon

Cons

Not enough of them on the road.

A great sleeper wagon with a pumping V6. My Avant has ran with the best of them and left a few behind. I've owned this car from New - 23 years now. I do NOT get tired of it in anyway. I like the way it feels when I get into it. The way it sounds and moves. I have other choices to drive. All German ( no BMW's - got rid of those years ago - also bought new ). I still grab the Avant keys most mornings - sun, snow, rain, wind. Anything the weather can toss at me I feel more than comfortable going through. I've never had any mechanical issues other than the water pump at the scheduled time it needed replaced. And a steering pump going out after 22 years of hard driving. While It only has 113000 mile on it. 85% or better of those mile are hard on the gas, hard on the breaks! Have I said this thing is fun! I will NEVER let it go!

Not Very Accurate
Pros

Fast once tuned, handles good, quality interior

Cons

5th Gear at 80mph is 3700rpm

I redo these cars engine, interior etc. They are very reliable and easy to work on (and cheap to do so) they are enthusiasts cars and I sell them as such and with that condition. They look good, they keep up with todays sedans, and get just as good of economy, and wagon variants sell for a lot more than what KBB will bother to list.

My favorite car of all time despite reliability
Pros

Fun to drive and timeless good looks

Cons

Maintenance is intensive.

As the title says, this was my favorite car, ever! It was unique (V6, AWD, 6spd manual, and fully loaded) practical, timeless styling, and super fun to drive. It felt elegant and sporty when you got in it even at more that 10 years old. The car was jus beautiful! I didn’t have to mod much on it (Bilstein shocks, rear sway bar, and BT system) to make it perfect. I would just stare at it in the garage at times. I loved how it handled the snow and ice, took curves, and the engine note. However, if I wasn’t a DIY person, I would have hated this car. Two or three sets of control arms, eating through expensive tires even on factory alignment settings, motor mounts, cats, intake flap, O2 sensors, radiator, antenna booster, coil packs, etc. There was always something wrong with the car. It was better when you just left the check engine light on cause, if you fix it, something else would brake. And Audi parts are the more expensive than Mercedes in my experience. Mine was fairly reliable compared to others but I would not recommend this car to just anyone. It’s definitely a drivers car but you should also be a “tinkerer”. You will work on it quite a bit it the car is enjoyable if you stay ahead of maintenance. Owned from 2006 @ 120,000 to 2015 @ 240,000 miles. And this car is still on the road but with a new engine. So, I really can’t complain. It was a good car for me.

Great Hobby Car
Pros

fun, fun, fun to drive, Bose sound system

Cons

repairs, repairs, repairs

I was looking for something all-wheel drive for my daughter to take to school in Nebraska when I came across a "great deal" on a 2002 Audi A4 Quattro with the 3.0 liter engine. I purchased the car in November of 2015 with 135,000 miles on it. The plan was to give it to my daughter for Christmas. A year later, I'm still getting it ready for her! It is a blast to drive on the curvy NC mountain roads. It hugs the corners and has plenty of power! I drive about 25K miles per year, but I've only been able to put 10,000 miles on this car because it spends so much time in my garage for repairs. Maintenance is key - and unfortunately, the car had not been maintained as it should have been and as I was led to believe when I bought it. The problems began about 20 minutes after I purchased the car. As I was driving home, the oil pressure light came on. Fortunately, an oil change and a new oil pressure sensor fixed the problem. Since then I've replaced the power steering pump, rack & pinion, power steering pump reservoir, coils, timing belt & water pump, and all the associated pulley's and tensioners that the previous owner claimed to have been changed - but hadn't. I've replaced both motor mounts, All four control arms/ball joints, strut and steering knuckle on the front driver's side, CV Axle on front driver's side, right rear wheel bearing, Both catalytic converters and both oxygen sensors on bank 1, the window cables on the front passenger side window and the window motor in the driver's door. (A used window motor cost me $100 from a local junk yard - and then I found Pull-a-Part - only $18 there!). I also "had" to replace the Audi Symphony stereo because it didn't work at all. As soon as I got it, I put new tires on it and got it aligned, but I'm already on my second set of tires - hugging the corners has a high price tag! My registration expired recently, but I was unable to re-register the car until the catalytic converters were replaced because the check engine light caused it to fail the safety/emissions inspection. I got it inspected and that night on the way home from work, one of the headlights went out. The next day, the left rear CV axle started clattering. Just when I think I've got everything fixed so I can sell it - something new breaks! If you enjoy working on cars and you have a garage and the time, you'll not be disappointed with the Audi - but when it's running - it's a sweet ride!

What a fun car.
Pros

fun to drive, tinted windows, AWD, leather

Cons

repairs, windows, no cigarette lighter

This vehicle was my first vehicle, and I've had it since I was 15 years old. It has been quite reliable and has never broken down on me. With the AWD, I was able to take it places that many four-door sedans can't normally go. The leather seats, though warm on a hot day, are easily cleaned and create a smooth interior, which is surprisingly spacious for a smaller car. The windows are tinted on all four side windows and the moon roof. I just fixed a head gasket leak and replaced the headlights. Three of the windows need their regulators fixed. The ABS light, Emergency Break light, Airbag light and Check Engine light are on. There is a communication issue with the computer that is causing these lights to remain on. As you may or may not know, Audi's are notorious for these types of repairs. If you can afford to pay for them, then I would highly recommend that you buy this car. It is an extremely fun car to drive. It rides very smooth and can reach speeds over 100mph without feeling any any difference in performance (tested on a closed course). Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you.

the best car I ever had -
Pros

smooth v6 engine, great handling, elegant in/out

Cons

Nothing

I had this car for 12 years, if I can describe in a simple sentence: Love the understated elegance, ride, looks and reliability of this car. it has 165K miles on it ad it rides perfectly. the only major repair was the replacement of the timing belt. This is suposed to occurr at 75 to 80K miles. I had it don at 140K, and the shop told me it was in good condition. I know I pushed my luck, but luckily I had no issue with it. If I would have to do it again, I would blindly buy this car again, no question
