Classic Reborn: Electric VW Microbus Successor to Appear in 2023

An electric successor to the beloved Volkswagen Bus will go on sale in the United States in mid-2023. The VW ID Buzz will appear as a 2024 model. The design hews closely to a concept car released in 2018, pictured here.

The iconic VW bus, officially named the Volkswagen Type 2, was in continuous production at factories around the world from 1949 until 2013.  It’s variously known as the Bus, Microbus, Love Bus, Transporter, Kombi, Camper, and Bulli. U.S. versions date from 1968 through 1979. It became an icon of 1960s counterculture, with its rear-mounted air-cooled engine and endlessly-variable interior.

Its successor will be an electric vehicle (EV). Details are sparse this early, but Volkswagen commercial vehicle chief Carsten Intra has confirmed that America will receive a long-wheelbase version. It will sell only as a passenger vehicle. Europe will see a short wheelbase version and several commercial cargo models.

Pricing is unknown at this early stage. The ID Buzz will likely share many components with the VW ID.4 EV, which starts at $39,995, plus a $1,195 destination fee.

Volkswagen reportedly could offer three different battery sizes. The entry-level ID Buzz will likely be rear-wheel-drive like the icon, with around 200 horsepower. A top-of-the-line all-wheel-drive edition will make around 300 horsepower.
