The output stats on GM’s new 4.3-liter V6 have just been released, and the base engine in the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will make 305 lb-ft of peak torque – the best figure of any standard V6 in the full-size pickup segment. Although its 285 horsepower does fall short of the 305 and 302 pony counts in the base V6s found in the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150, the GM engine does top the twist figures of its two closest rivals by 36 and 27 lb-ft, respectively. The V6 in the Toyota Tundra makes 270 horses and 278 lb-ft of torque.

The torque advantage of GM’s new 4.3-liter EcoTec3 six directly translates into better off-the-line responsiveness and, more importantly, into enhanced towing capacity. It allows V6 versions of the 2014 Silverado and 2014 Sierra to haul a trailer weighing up to 7,200 pounds — 700 pounds more than the Ram, 500 more than the Ford, and 2,300 pounds beyond the base Tundra V6.
Like its 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 siblings, the new 4.3-liter V6 features direct fuel injection, Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing to enhance efficiency. Also like the V8s, it is backed by a 6-speed automatic transmission. While GM has not yet released EPA fuel economy estimates on this new V6, they are expected to be at or near the top of the comparative ratings charts.
