Reaffirming that it intends to build where it sells, Hyundai Motor America president and CEO, John Krafcik, confirmed that its Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) facility in Montgomery will soon become the new home of the redesigned 2011 Hyundai Elantra. Set for a formal reveal at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show and due at dealerships early next year, sedan versions of the 2011 Elantra will start rolling out of a factory that already builds the Korean automaker’s best-selling Sonata model as well as its popular Santa Fe SUV. The Elantra Touring wagon will continue to be manufactured in Korea.
Consistently ranking as one of Hyundai’s highest quality plants anywhere, HMMA has turned out more than 1,200,000 vehicles since opening in 2005. Hyundai presently produces over half of the vehicles it sells here at plants located in the U.S. Earlier this month, Hyundai announced that Santa Fe production is being transferred to the new Kia Motors America plant in West Point, Georgia, to allow HMMA to better accommodate the needs of the growing Sonata commitment as well as the demands of Elantra production. The KMA facility in West point currently is the U.S. source point of the Kia Sorento SUV.
