Jeep continues to show us how a nimble city runabout doesn’t have to spend the weekend parked by the curb. The Renegade can be the grocery hauler through the week while still being able to stretch its legs on the weekends.
This small SUV truly shines on the trails. Opt for the Trailhawk trim, and the Renegade’s off-roading prowess is impressive, awarding it our stamp of approval as one of the best off-roaders in its class. Iconic Jeep styling carries through to the Renegade lineup, and there’s no shortage of fun design touches to discover. But it’s smaller, pricier, less efficient, and has lower resale values than most subcompact SUVs, making it a tougher sell for shoppers who don’t need its off-road proficiencies.
The Jeep Renegade competes with small SUVs, including the Subaru Crosstrek and Kia Seltos. Like the Renegade, the Crosstrek includes all-wheel drive (AWD) across its lineup, while it and the Seltos have a lower starting price than the Renegade.
2023 Jeep Renegade pricing starts at $19,835 for the Renegade Latitude Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $29,445 when new. The range-topping 2023 Renegade Trailhawk Sport Utility 4D starts at $23,025 today, originally priced from $34,660.

Out on the road, the Renegade has more in common with Jeep’s rough-and-tumble Wrangler than its luxury-like Grand Cherokee. It’s not particularly smooth, quiet, or refined, but we’re not sure we’d even want it to be.
The Renegade shines brightest when it’s getting dirty. With standard all-wheel drive, 8 inches of ground clearance, and plenty of Jeep know-how, the Renegade is an off-road standout. Add the low-range gearing and all-terrain tires of the Trailhawk trim, and the Renegade will get up and over almost anything a weekend warrior throws at it. If you’d like a subcompact SUV that can live up to your big outdoorsy lifestyle, few can do it as well as the smallest Jeep.
Character, practicality, and spaciousness form a cohesive relationship in this interior. The Renegade is on the small side of the subcompact SUV segment, but its boxy shape helps it make the most of its dimensions. Head and leg room are very generous in the front, and the back can easily accommodate two adults. Cargo space behind the rear seats is below average for the segment, but folding down those seats more than doubles the available space.
Hard plastics line the dash here and there, which is typical of this segment, but we love the overall design. Easter eggs can be found throughout the cabin, including hidden Jeep grille icons, mud splatter on the tach, and even a trail map of Moab inside a cubby of the Trailhawk. We appreciate that Jeep understands its customers and their desire for vehicles with personality.
2023 Subcompact SUV Roominess
We love that the Renegade strays from its competitors in exterior styling. We’re not sick of seeing these little guys on the street, but it’s interesting to note that while the Renegade has received subtle design changes over the years, it’s closing in on a decade of the same general design. We’re eager to see what Jeep can dream up next for the Renegade line.
Trailhawk Trim
We love that the Trailhawk trim is much more than an appearance package, offering off-road goodies you’ll actually use on the trail, including 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, increased ground clearance, a Selec-Terrain system with hill descent control and Rock Mode, Active Drive Low Mode, underbody protection, front and rear tow hooks, and unique front and rear fascias.
Trailhawk Elite Group Option
To further enhance your off-road creature comforts, Jeep has introduced a Trailhawk-specific option including leather-trimmed seats, a power-adjustable 8-way driver’s seat with 2-way lumbar adjustment, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a windshield wiper deicer.
Styling
Jeep allows you to make this SUV uniquely your own, from a contrasting roof color to stripes and decals; no two Renegades need to look exactly alike.
Uconnect Infotainment System
This user-friendly infotainment system is equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and is one of our favorites for its clear and easy-to-use interface.
AWD Standard
Ditching the front-wheel-drive (FWD) model of last year’s lineup means a heftier starting price, but it’ll keep you moving through mud, snow, or dirt, even in its cheapest form.
Standard Turbo 4-Cylinder
With the standard turbo engine, the Renegade feels at home accelerating from a standstill.
The Renegade offers more power than many subcompact SUVs, but with a tradeoff in fuel economy. Equip the Renegade with the Trailer-Tow Group, and you’re looking at a max towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.

The Jeep Renegade is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. This is typical of competitors in this segment.
