The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is the family-friendly choice in the Jeep lineup. This midsize SUV has 3-row seating and a more luxurious interior than you might expect in a Jeep. What isn’t surprising is its outstanding off-road capabilities when equipped with 4-wheel drive.
This SUV continues the Grand Cherokee’s long reputation of blending on-road comfort with off-road proficiency without compromise, now with three rows of seats. It competes in a challenging segment with rivals like the Kia Telluride, Nissan Pathfinder, and Subaru Ascent, but this Jeep is on the more premium side of its class, which explains its higher price tag.
The regular 2-row Grand Cherokee is reviewed separately.
2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L pricing starts at $28,861 for the Grand Cherokee L Laredo Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $43,830 when new. The range-topping 2023 Grand Cherokee L Summit Reserve Sport Utility 4D starts at $45,634 today, originally priced from $74,835.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is comfortable in a straight line and composed around corners. Good off-road capabilities usually come at the expense of on-road comfort, but that isn’t the case here. You and your passengers will find little to complain about in around-town driving or long-distance road trips, thanks to the compliant ride of this Jeep.
When the pavement ends, the Grand Cherokee L is more adventurous than the average family SUV. The lower trims are available with the Quadra-Trac I 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system, which isn’t too different from the all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems available in almost every midsize SUV.
But the upper trims equipped with 4WD have the Quadra-Trac II system. On top of getting the Selec-Terrain system with different drive modes, it has a 2-speed transfer case, adding to its capabilities. Opt for the Off Road Group in the Overland trim, and you’ll get the Quadra-Drive II system with an electronic locking rear differential.
The standard 3.6-liter V6 engine in the Grand Cherokee L is more than adequate for most drivers. It delivers a nice balance of power and efficiency on par with most of this segment. Drivers with an appetite for more muscular performance will want the optional Hemi V8, which isn’t as fuel efficient but comes with a nice boost in power, torque, and towing capacity.
The interior quality of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L is a middle ground between mainstream and luxury. The top trims are firmly in luxury SUV territory, particularly the Summit Reserve trim, with features like Palermo leather seating, massaging front seats, and a McIntosh 19-speaker premium audio. No matter what trim you go with, though, you will get a comfortable and well-equipped family SUV.
Unless you count the Wagoneer sub-brand, the Grand Cherokee L is the only Jeep model with 3-row seating. The interior space is pretty generous, and second-row captain’s chairs are standard (a bench second-row seat is optional). The third row is reasonably easy to access and is suitable for children but a little tight for adults.
The cargo space in the Grand Cherokee L is plentiful for an SUV this size. It has 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space with all of the seats are in place, and you get a generous 84.6 cubic feet of space with all the rear seats folded down.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee L has a rugged and upscale aesthetic, which is befitting of its personality. It’s a look that’s unmistakably Jeep. It looks more luxurious in the upper trims with fancier wheels and more chrome, and the Overland trim has a more brawny front fascia with tow hooks.
The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is on the bigger side of the midsize 3-row SUV class. Its dimensions are similar to those of the Chevrolet Traverse, Volkswagen Atlas, and Mazda CX-9.
1. Adventurous Off-Road
The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is arguably the most capable off-roader in its class. Every 4WD-equipped Grand Cherokee L is a good off-roader, but it gets Trail Rated performance with the Off Road Group available for the Overland trim. It adds the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system with an electronic limited-slip differential, real skid plates, and all-terrain tires, which makes this Grand Cherokee L ready for any adventure.
2. Comfortable On-Road
The off-road chops of the Grand Cherokee L do not come at the expense of on-road comfort. This SUV has a smooth ride, composed handling, and comfortable seats. It gets comfier in the Overland 4×4, Summit 4×4, and Summit Reserve models thanks to the Quadra-Lift air suspension with semi-active damping, which improves comfort and capability.
3. Premium Interior
Step inside the Grand Cherokee L to see why it’s on the more expensive side of its class. It has excellent interior design and an impressive suite of standard features, including a digital gauge cluster, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and second-row captain’s chairs. It gets particularly luxurious in the top Summit Reserve trim with premium features like Palermo leather seats, McIntosh 19-speaker audio, a panoramic moonroof, and a long list of safety tech features.
4. Uconnect Infotainment Systems
The Uconnect infotainment systems available in the Grand Cherokee L are feature-rich and easy to use. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, and premium audio systems from Alpine and McIntosh are optional. The Laredo and Altitude models have an 8.4-inch screen, while the Limited trim and above get a bigger 10.1-inch touchscreen with navigation.
5. Rear Entertainment System
An available rear entertainment system adds to the family-friendly character of this 3-row SUV. It has two 10.1-inch screens and Amazon Fire TV built-in, so there’s always something to watch. Optional on the Limited trim and above.
6. Muscular Hemi V8
The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is available with a big, potent V8 engine. Specifically, a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 357 horsepower and a maximum towing capacity of 7,200. The growling exhaust note is the cherry on top.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee L has two engine options. The base engine is a tried and true 3.6-liter V6, which is the sensible choice for most drivers due to its excellent balance of power and efficiency. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard, and 4-wheel drive (4WD) is optional with the V6.
There’s an optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with more power, torque, and towing muscle than the V6, but returns poor fuel economy. It comes exclusively with 4WD.
Every Grand Cherokee L is equipped with a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission.
It’s worth noting that a plug-in hybrid powertrain is available for the 2-row Grand Cherokee, but it’s unavailable for the 3-row Grand Cherokee L.
