Electric Variation Available
By Eric Brandt
Updated January 30, 2025
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is as capable and comfortable as any model in the lineup, but features a new plug-in hybrid powertrain rated to deliver up to 26 miles of all-electric range. When that full charge is spent, the Grand Cherokee 4xe operates as a gas/electric hybrid.
It continues the nameplate’s legacy as a road-friendly SUV that’s comfortable and practical for the daily commute but a capable Jeep off-roader when the pavement ends. With a diverse model range that includes a well-equipped base trim, luxurious Summit Reserve, and rugged Trailhawk, there’s a Grand Cherokee 4xe for just about everyone.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe pricing starts at $26,552 for the Grand Cherokee 4xe Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $61,660 when new. The range-topping 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe Summit Reserve Sport Utility 4D starts at $35,730 today, originally priced from $78,870.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
We haven’t spent any time behind the wheel of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe as of this writing. However, the turbocharged plug-in hybrid powertrain is the same one that powers the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which we like. In the hybrid Wrangler, this powertrain delivers quick acceleration on the street while retaining great off-road chops.
As for driving comfort, we’ll be pleased if it’s as road-friendly as the non-hybrid version of the all-new 2022 Grand Cherokee. The regular Grand Cherokee has a firmer ride and heavier steering than most midsize SUVs, but that’s a small price to pay for its excellent off-road capabilities.
The inside of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is more upscale than the average midsize SUV. Even the base Limited trim is handsome, with excellent materials used throughout the cabin. It gets more luxurious in the upper trims with premium available features like a McIntosh 19-speaker premium audio, massaging front seats, a rear entertainment system, and much more.
This cabin is roomy enough to seat up to four adults comfortably, but the passenger and cargo space is a bit smaller than most midsize 2-row SUVs. Drivers looking for more room and a third row of seats should consider the bigger Grand Cherokee L, but it’s not available as a plug-in hybrid.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe proves that hybrids don’t need to look weird. We appreciate that the hybrid 4xe model looks pretty much the same as the stylish non-hybrid Grand Cherokee. However, the Trailhawk model uses cool blue accents rather than red, which is a nice touch that makes the hybrid stand out.
The aesthetic of the Grand Cherokee 4xe speaks to its personality as rugged yet practical with a touch of luxury. The higher-end trims have a more premium look with tasteful chrome accents and stylish wheel designs.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is on the bigger side of midsize 2-row SUVs. It’s slightly larger than the Honda Passport, Chevrolet Blazer, and Ford Edge. It’s also a bit bigger than its closest rival, the Kia Sorento plug-in hybrid.
Turbocharged Hybrid Powertrain
In addition to 26 miles of pure-electric range, the plug-in hybrid powertrain powering the Grand Cherokee 4xe puts up impressive numbers like 375 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque, and impressive towing capacity of 6,000 l
Three Drive Modes
Hybrid Mode, Electric Mode, and Esave Mode allow you to customize your drive based on how you want to optimize the electric power of the Grand Cherokee 4xe.
The base trim of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the Limited model, which is a mid-range trim in the non-hybrid Grand Cherokee. On top of the plug-in hybrid powertrain and 4-wheel drive, standard features on the Limited include Capri leather seats, heated front and back seats, a heated steering wheel, Selec-Terrain with five drive modes, a power liftgate, LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and much more.
The standard Uconnect 5 infotainment system uses an 8.4-inch screen loaded with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, HD radio, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM. It also comes standard with an Alpine 9-speaker premium audio system.
Standard safety tech features in this Grand Cherokee PHEV include full-speed adaptive cruise control, active lane management, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear parking sensors.
If you like the idea of a plug-in hybrid SUV that’s also an excellent off-roader, you’ll be interested in the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk. This is the best off-roader in the lineup. It features Quadra-Drive 4WD with an electronic limited-slip rear differential, sway bar disconnect, Quadra-Life air suspension, Selec-Speed Control, an off-road camera, and a unique appearance package with 11.3 inches of ground clearance. It also has improved approach and departure angles along with blue tow hooks and navigation.
The Overland trim is both premium and rugged. It has front and rear fascias like those of the Trailhawk but adds luxurious features such as chrome trim, a hands-free power liftgate, LED accent lighting, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, machined 20-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, 5-color ambient interior lighting, perforated Nappa leather seats, and front parking sensors.
The Summit model takes the Grand Cherokee 4xe to the next level of luxury. On top of its stylish appearance package with platinum chrome trim, it adds the same Quadra-Drive II 4WD system in the Trailhawk, 4-zone automatic climate control, quilted Nappa leather seat bolsters, memory front seats, massaging front seats, and genuine wood interior trim.
Additional tech and driver assistance features on the Summit trim include a 10.1-inch infotainment system, a 360-degree camera, intersection collision assist, drowsy driver detection, park assist, traffic sign recognition, and the Active Driving Assist system.
At the very top of the model range is the Summit Reserve model. The Summit Reserve package builds on the Summit trim with hand-wrapped Palermo leather seats, open-pore waxed walnut interior trim, a suede headliner, ventilated front and back seats, a McIntosh 19-speaker premium audio system, a 10.25-inch passenger interactive display, and 21-inch wheels.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain under the hood of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe uses a 2.0-liter inline-4 gasoline engine mated to two electric motors. It strikes a nice balance of performance and efficiency with impressive power and torque numbers while returning an estimated EPA combined fuel economy rating of 56 MPGe.
This Jeep can travel up to 26 miles on electricity alone with a full charge before the gas engine needs to kick in. That number can change depending on how you use the three drive modes to preserve electric power.
Every Grand Cherokee 4xe has an 8-speed automatic transmission and 4-wheel drive.

Jeep may offer a gasoline engine in its first electric vehicle (EV). Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa told the U.K.’s Autocar…
A pair of 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs negotiate a tricky rise up a rocky trail in…
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid starts at $55,865, and will crest $75,000 when fully loaded. The price premium compared to similarly equipped gas models is about $12,000, but with federal and state tax incentives, predicted resale value advantages, and fuel cost savings, it’s very possible a Grand Cherokee 4xe could cost you less in the long run. In fact, Jeep says the 4xe should have a slightly lower lease payment than a comparable gas model. Keep in mind that the “base” Grand Cherokee 4xe is better equipped than the entry-level gas model (which starts at $38,720), so be careful about comparing those two.
Overall, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup is pricier than other 2-row midsize SUVs. But as something that straddles the line between mainstream and luxury SUVs, the Grand Cherokee’s extra cost is justified by plenty of buyers. Enough, in fact, to make the Jeep Grand Cherokee one of the country’s 10 best-selling vehicles in 2021.
As a more efficient version of an icon, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe promises to be a winner. It’s a redesigned model with an all-new powertrain, so it’ll take some time to prove itself.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe can tow up to 6,000 pounds. For reference, the V6- and V8-powered Grand Cherokees are rated to tow 6,200 and 7,200 pounds, respectively.
Yes, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is a good car, as reflected by its above-average Kelley Blue Book rating of 4.3 out of 5.
Used 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe prices currently range from $26,552 for the Sport Utility 4D to $35,730 for the Summit Reserve Sport Utility 4D when purchasing from a dealership, depending on a range of factors like equipment, mileage, and condition.
The cheapest 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the Sport Utility 4D, with a Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price of $26,552.
